Head coach Matt Rhule announced Saturday that transfer Anthony Colandrea has won the starting job and will lead the Cornhuskers into their Sept. 5 season opener against Ohio, closing the book on an offseason competition that also included TJ Lateef and Daniel Kaelin.

How Colandrea Won the Job

Colandrea arrives in Lincoln with 31 career starts and the reigning Mountain West Offensive Player of the Year award in hand after a 2025 season spent entirely at UNLV, where he threw for 3,459 yards, 23 touchdowns and nine interceptions while adding 649 rushing yards and 10 more scores on the ground. Before that, he started at Virginia across the 2023 and 2024 seasons, giving him a level of experience that neither Lateef nor Kaelin could match.

Lateef, a sophomore, had already gotten meaningful game reps of his own, taking over the final four games of 2025 after Raiola went down with a season-ending injury. Kaelin, also a sophomore, rounded out the three-man competition. But Rhule’s comments made clear that Colandrea’s dual-threat production and track record of starting experience carried the day, and the staff wanted its answer locked in before the opener rather than playing out a prolonged rotation into the season.
