Got back in the black yesterday with Lawton winning the fifth and the trifecta hitting. The exacta was taken off the board, so it was a no bet.
Back in the black with $227 bet, $237.50 returned for a 4.63% roi
For today, we are going to take a stab at the Charles Town card. With most horses on a two-month layoff, there should be opportunities to grab a price.
Beautiful Evening – mid 60’s and clear.
1st Post – 7:00pm EDT
$5K Maiden Claimer for WV bred girls which are 3,4,5,6 years old. 6.5f
#3 Sing Frosty (8/1) gets the needed class drop and her last two have been stretch outs where two back she closed well to receive fourth place money. She had a nice work (3f :36.8) and her trainer, John Casey, is 14% bringing horses back from a layoff. #7 Marylee (4/1) is an interesting sort who clipped heels last out and lost her rider. In her prior race, she scored the second highest Equibase number of this gang. She has not had a workout during this time, so it’s a tough call. #8 West Virginia Pam (12/1) has the chance to take this at a price. Her class drop, races at the distance and the addition of blinkers are a solid reason to include her. #6 Thunderous (5/2) is going to be the favorite in this and she has faded in all four of her races and three of these were at 4.5f and one at 6.5f. No thanks.
Pick - #3 to w/p and exacta box 3-8-7
$5K Claiming for 3yo’s+ NW2 4.5f
What’s not to like about #2 Bullgrats (5/2)? Leading rider Arnaldo Bocachica (30% in sprints) gets him for the second time, a recent freshening on 4/23, trainer Kevin Patterson is a brow raising 64% off the layoff and he’s a 65% winner with this jockey. SmartCap shows his last out as best and speed and class rank third. #8 Rock On (4/1) has our best overall class and speed. He’s coming off a win last out vs NW1 and now moves up. Two back, he was in a $15K claimer for NW2 and put in a solid outing to get up for second. This horse will be tough, unless you play the percentages – its trainer is 0% won last and 0% off 2-6 months. #5 Not A Trick (3/1) second entrant for Kevin Patterson and first off the claim where he’s 36%. Look for this horse, along with the 9-8-1 to take the lead.
Pick - #2 to come off the brisk pace and close the deal.
$5K Maiden Claimer for 3-4-5-6 year olds going 4.5f
#1 Tun Tun (3/1) and #8 River Flyinred Rvf (10/1) are both second time starters. Tun Tun retains jockey Victor Rodriguez and Flyinred gets blinkers and first Lasix. #2 Bret’s Legacy (5/1) has our best overall class and speed and got a solid work recently. This horse has learned to lose too much, with his last four totaling 64 lengths. Christian Hiraldo has #4 Just Go With It (9/2) who was bumped at the break in its last, ran up to the leaders and got up for third. This guy has had gate/start troubles his last three and is tough to trust.
My pick is #6 Ready To Charm (4/1) with Bocachica in the irons, look for this Kentucky bred to be the lone speed and wire the field.
3yo $5K Claimers who are NWx or NW4 1.0625 miles
SmartCap has #8 Charming Deputy (5/1) as best overall class and speed as well as best last. #6 Poshsky (6/1) has second best overall speed, class and last. Aqu shipper has zero starts at the track and has never raced the eleventeen times at a bullring to make the distance. Pass. I recently met the trainer of #2 Caladan (3/1), Anthony Farrior, who is an impressively blunt guy. This Mr. Greeley colt has third best overall speed, class and last. Farrior is 50% off 2-6 months, 30% with won last and 43 with Bocachica. This horse has had three workouts since early April and looks to be in strong shape.
My pick is #2 Caladan.
$5K Starter Allowance for fillies and mares that are 3yo+ NWx. 6.5f
#2 Thesweetesttaboo (5/2) has our best overall class, speed and last. This Mr. Greeley mare is 6:4-0-0 at CT and recently had a sharp work of :48 for four furlongs. Trainer Dunham 21% with won last, 40% with jockey JD Acosta, and 20% off 2-6 months. If you’re playing horizontals, this is a solid spot to single.
My pick is #2 Thesweetesttaboo.
$27K MSW for WVa bred fillies and mares 3-4-5-6 yo’s going 4.5f
#1 Peaceful Child (4/1) just completed a four furlong work in :47.4 from the gate. That extrapolates to :53.3 which means that his breeze work from the gate is faster than most have held a race. First Lasix could mean gate jitters and therein lies the risk. #9 Pipers Gold is the tandem choice for me. Her last was a solid outing at this level where she veered out at the break and ended up playing catch up to get up for place, one length back. Had a freshening on May 6th and is probably going to take the money in this.
My Bets:
#1 wp
Trifecta 1-9/1-9/all. ($8)
$15K Claiming for fillies and mares who are NW2 going 6.5f
#1 Heraway (7/2) is a Parx shipper who has seconditis with a 14:1-8-2 record. However, the change from that track to tonights’ is going to be the tonic she needs. She has our best overall class by far, best overall speed by a wide margin and has best last and best last two back. The switch from the sands of Parx to CT will provide much relief and she’ll get the lead and not let go. #4 Talkback (4/1) put in a solid move at LrL last out, a speed favoring track, and can menace. # 5 Right Notion (6/1) is trained by leader Jeff Runco who is 40% with horses off 2-6 months, and has had three good works during this off time.
My Bet: #1 wp
$29K Allowance for fillies and mares that are 3yo+ NWx or NW2 going a mile and a sixteenth.
#4 Pecan Pattie (3/1) is another Parx shipper who is 14: 4-4-2 for $158K lifetime and has a late kick that you’ll witness tonight. She has best overall class, speed and best last for her last three. This is her garden spot, distance-wise, where she just won a $25K starter allowance in 1:49.1, a time that none of these have neared.
My bet: #4 Pecan Pattie
$5K Claimers that are WVa bred 3yo+ NW2 going 6.5f.
If I were playing a pick6, or any other horizontal, I’d hit the all button for this.
#10 Castle One (8/1) has best overall speed and class. She also has best for the last two and three back.
#9 Lass Moment (10/1) has next best overall speed and class, best race two back and near best three back.
#8 Jacob T (7/2) has best last and should hit the board
#5 Fear The Lati (10/1) has near best overall speed and class and best race two back.
#3 Chesapeake Charlie (4/1) has near best last as does #4 Mini Bolt (12/1)
If I had to make a choice, it would be with the best jockey in this race - #8 Jacob T with JD Acosta.
