A native of Louisville, RT sat on the shoulders of his brother at his first Kentucky Derby and watched Cannonade win the 100th running amongst 163,000 “tumultuous fans” [sic]. Mesmerized by what he saw, the following Tuesday, RT and his friend cut school and went to Churchill. In a haze, they wandered around attempting to act like they knew what they were doing. So, who does RT run into? His Father….who looked at him and said, “what are you doing here?” Shocked, RT could only think to reply, “what are YOU doing here?” To which his Dad answered….”don’t tell your mother.” They became fast friends from then on. That was 1974 and he’s been handicapping since.
