For Sunday, we are going to Gulfstream for the 10th race. This is a five-furlong turf sprint for Florida bred three-year olds which have never won other than maiden, claiming or starter or which have never won two races.

This should be a competitive race with #6 R Boy Evans (4/1) coming off two wins in a row including a claimer and a maiden claimer, which qualifies him. He was claimed for $16K last time for the Maker barn and has a couple of works since. He is protected from claiming today, so he’s worth keeping an eye on. Maker is 14% off the claim and 22% with Luis Saez. There is one warning – his previous trainer was Georgina Baxter who is sitting out for a month for overmedication of her horses with Clenbuterol. If you read the article by Mark Casse, you’ll know the harsh affects too much of this drug has on horses. SmartCap gives this horse the best last numbers.

#2 Captain Ron (5/2) is best overall speed per SmartCap and is the co-front runner in this race with R Boy Evans. He has a propensity to fade and it wouldn’t surprise to see R Boy Evans dispense with him before the turn.

#5 Dark Ages (8/1) is best overall class, near best speed and is a first time started for its new barn of Elizabeth Dobles (35% in this situation). Had a freshening and should be pressing/closing around the turn.

#1 Honolulu Express (6/1) has near best overall speed and class along with best last two. Solid work on 2.29 and will be flying late. Jaramillo back in the irons where they won at GPW two back. Second off a layoff and will be a factor in this.

#7 Cryogenic (7/2) is going to take a lot of money with Irad coming back to ride him. Irad won on this guy last time and will be a factor hitting the board.

Money - #4 Amelia’s Wild Ride (10/1) is 15:4-3-0 for $237,310 or $15,821 per race. R Boy Evans is 2 out of 2 for $32,500 or $16,250 per.

How I’ll bet:

Given the two speed horses in this race, I’ll look to the horse with the best late kick. That will be Honolulu Express. The last time Jaramillo rode this gelding, he clicked off an 11:2 in the final call. That’s about ½ second faster than the rest.

I’ll also bet an exacta box with Dark Ages and Cryogenic and a trifecta adding R Boy Evans.

Happy Hunting!
