Friday’s edition of Equine Races and Bovine Laces

In Bovine Laces for the weekend –

Carolina -3.5 - Mack Brown has this team heading in the right direction with the last two wins over South Carolina and Miami. Although not basketball, this rivalry carries great disdain no matter which sport or contest they meet in. Duke getting beat like a circus monkey last week by Alabama and not really beating anyone of high value, causes me to make this play.

Wisky +15 – IF the badgers had not boneheadedly lost to Illinois, what would this line be? I know…IF grandma had balls, she’d be grandpa, however, think about that…Wisconsin a better club than last, plays tough D and can keep this number under 15.

Pats -12 – Belichick’s defense versus a flippant, second year QB? STFU. 36-6 Pats.

Carolina +6 & +207 m/l - what a pickup without Cam Newton. As the adage goes, “you have cancer, cut it out.” Now look what’s happened since….four wins in a row, a defense that has faced the top 15 offenses to date and facing a Niners squad that is absent their starting left and right tackles and fullback out.

12:45 est Race 1

$5K Claiming NW2, 1 mile on dirt for Ohio breds 3yo+

#1 & 1A Glorious Freedom and Turf Dispute (7/2) - Mahoning Valley plays mainly to speed and this tandem has both speed and closing ability. Look for Glorious Freedom to grab the lead unchallenged and either take it the distance or his stablemate, Turf Dispute lay near and close the deal.

#2 – A Girl Has No Name (2/1) - trainer Cipriano Contreras 25% wins when switching from sprints to routes. Has the highest Equibase ratings of this race and the trainer is 25% overall wins this year.

Bets - $10 exacta box 1-2

1:12 est Race 2

$5K Ohio Bred Claimers 3yo+ going 6 furlongs

#8 – Johnny Utah (6/1) - this is one of those cases where you look at the PP’s and discern how the race will run and then look for the logical choice of who will emerge. There is a lot of front speed in this race and if this El Enta gelding can stay near, he’ll have a shot at passing the tiring leaders. Then it hits you – this is a $5K claiming race, so the chances of these types doing exactly the way you see it is about as assured as The Mets making a smart decision. Going lightly…

The bets (caveat emptor) $15/w $20/p #8

2:36 est Race 5

$7.5K Ohio Bred Claiming Fillies and Mares NW2 going 6 furlongs

#3 Double D’s Revenge (4/1) - if for anything, her name alone is worth the wager; yet, she comes into the race with the strongest class and speed ratings. Erik Barbaran up who was the sixth leading rider here last winter/spring, so he is acclimated to this strip. This will be her first race for the Candace Huffman barn and along with the jockey, they're winning at a 17% clip. Earlier this spring, she was in stakes races, allowance and the last two, a $15K and then recently a $7.5K claimer where, when Barbaran was in the irons, she was competitive.

Bets - $20/w $40/p #3

3:04 est Race 6

$23.5K Allowance for NW2 going 6 furlongs for 3yo+

#8 – Ruling Empire (5/2) - speed vs class? The dilemna of this entry and the #5 – Cave Run. I’ll take this shipper from Thistledown. This Scat Daddy colt was knocked around at the start in his last, came four wide in the stretch and was closing well to just miss by ¾ length. His last Equibase speed figures of 92, 86 & 93 is head and shoulders above the rest and he should win this race.

Bets - $50/w $100/p #8

Race 7 - #10 – Sensational Trick (5/1)

Race 8 - #2 Baysider (3/1)
