Saturdays’ Second-String Stakes

As the snow moves into The Twin Cities area, it’s seemingly fitting to ‘cap some bottom stakes races that are upcoming today.

If you are looking for an opinion on some of the great turf stakes at Woodbine, or the QEII at Keeneland, or perhaps the Floral Park or Sands Point stakes at Belmont, then you may want to check here. Then again, Desert Encounter in the $800K G1 Pattison at WO looks intriguing – Andrea Atzeni in the irons for hot trainer David Simcock may fetch a decent price.

4:31 est – Parx Racing #9 –

The $100K M.P. Ballezzi Appreciation One Mile Stakes

3yo+, One Mile on the Dirt

#4 – Spun To Run (2/1) last seen in the $1M PA Derby where he reared at the gate about three seconds before it opened. Paco Lopez fought like hell to settle him down and never seemed to get him to relax. He ran in the three, then four path the entire way giving War Of Will, Improbable and Mr. Money all they could handle until Math Wizard cleared out the crowd in the stretch. Had Lopez not fought with him so hard in the beginning, this Hard Spun colt could have possibly been in The Breeders Cup conversation.

#2 – Carlos L (2/1) – highly intriguing entry. This will be his first U.S. race after being shipped in from Panama and subsequently clearing quarantine, for Jorge Navarro (46% winners @ Parx). Equibase did not signify whether he’ll get Lasix, so that edge may not be a viable handicapping clue. Judging from his workouts and running line results, he seems prepped and ready to be a factor. Carlos is lifetime 9:5-2-2, which smacks of his game spirit and he won his last out by blistering the G1 challengers by 13.75 lengths.

$100/w & $200/p - #4

$5 Exacta 2-4/all,

$2 Trifecta 2-4/2-4/all

7:10p est - Turf Paradise #7

The $25K Bienvenidos Stakes

3yo+, 6.5 Furlongs on the dirt

#7 – Distinctive B (9/2) taking a drop in class, an abnormal inversion from the norm, moving from the claiming ranks to a stakes, where today this Florida bred is racing for less money. His last five races have been for $42K, $64K, $47K, $38K and $59K of which he has been competitive in all of them sans an AOC in the slop. He had a solid freshening here on Sept. 26 and should be the one to catch. There’s not a lot of detail about his Jockey, Logan Cormier, other than he returned to Arizona Downs after a 16-year absence and ended up in the top 10 with his last day getting two winners.

#12 – It Makes Sense (3-1) shipper from Canterbury had a successful campaign there notching three winners, a place and an oom in five starts. Gets leading rider Scott Stevens along with trainer Shawn Davis where they’re a 29% combo. IMS comes in off a $50K stakes place finish at Cby and had a solid work over the track. Stevens rode this gelding once this spring past and got collared in the final paces.

11- Silver Ride (5/1) gets blinkers off for this event, has best class rating and second best last numbers. This Mr. Greeley gray runs well in spurts before bouncing and today catches him on an upswing. Robertino Diodoro one of the leading trainers here fetching 23%.

#2 – Buckys Pick (15/1) could be the riches-to-rags-back-to-riches story. This Tribal Rule colt had a golden two year old campaign going 4-4 at three different tracks before being shelved for a couple of months. Having been claimed three times in four races this year and having just one win, Bucky has been relaxing in the SoCal sun since mid-August and working forwardly for this; including a four furlong scorcher in :47.6.

Taking a shot on #2 - $25/w $50/p

$25 bet - Exacta box 11-12-7-4

Trifecta – 7-12/7-12-11/2, 7-12/2/7-12-11, 2/7-12/7-12-11

7:10 est - Lethbridge #8

The $8K Bullys Futurity

2yo, 6 furlongs on the dirt

For those of you who are unfamiliar, Lethbridge is just over the Canadian border about halfway from Great Falls, MT and Calgary.

#2 – Shims Shadow (7/1) hopefully these odds stay near this morning line because this is the horse to beat. Recently dq’d as the 1-2 favorite last out, he lugged out and couldn’t get righted in the slop. Gets leading rider Trevor Simpson today and this stretch out will play in his favor.

#8 Lil Miss Molly (2/1) will take a lot of money in this since beating the lot of entries in a similar race. This Holy Bull colt will take the lead and the stretch out will not play to his advantage.

$100/w $200/p #2

9:11 est - Delta Downs

The $100K Gold Cup Stakes

Louisiana Bred 3yo+ going one mile on the dirt

#3 – Mageez (4/1) has been racing at or below this level since the beginning of this year, Spectacular Bid colt takes a class drop and has had two solid works as he points for this first stakes race of their season. Look for jockey Roberto Morales to lay close to the lead and take command in the stretch.

#10 Trevilion (10/1) comes out of the G3 LaD Super Derby where he frankly gave a dull effort and was overmatched. Drops in today retaining one of DD’s leading rider Diego Saenz and his stalking style should work well to the speed. Trainer Victor Arcenaux tough at Delta getting 38% winners on dirt.

$50/w $100/p #3
