Washington has dropped its last game while Chicago has lost three straight, but only one of these teams is still fighting for playoff seeding when the Mystics visit Wintrust Arena on Thursday night.

Quick take:

  • Pick: Washington Mystics -1.5
  • Why: The Mystics have far more talent up front and Chicago is down two rotation guards to injury
  • The number to watch: Under is 6-1 in Chicago’s last seven games overall

Washington sits 24-16 and locked into the East’s No. 4 seed picture, having gone 6-4 over its last 10 games even with Thursday’s matchup coming off a loss in Las Vegas. Chicago, at 15-25, is playing out the string in fifth place, its playoff hopes essentially buried under a three-game skid and a roster that’s been hit hard by injuries down the stretch.

Why the Number Keeps Creeping Toward Washington

The line opened with Washington favored by as little as 1.5 points at some books and as much as 4.5 at others, with the moneyline settling around -125 to -126 for the Mystics and the total sitting near 165.5-167.5. That spread volatility says more about market uncertainty than anything else — ESPN’s analytics model has this one nearly a coin flip at 54.1% for Washington — but the Mystics’ superior two-way roster and Chicago’s growing injury list explain why sharper money keeps nudging this toward Washington. Bettors weighing a side here should check the DraftKings promo code before placing anything, since new-user offers on a game like this can soften the risk on a tight number.

Chicago’s Depleted Frontcourt Meets Washington’s Rebounding Machine

Chicago has been gutted at guard and wing all season. Skylar Diggins, who was averaging 14.2 points and 4.9 assists before her knee gave out, is done for the year. Rickea Jackson, the team’s leading scorer at 18.0 points per game in limited action, tore her ACL back in May. DiJonai Carrington is out with a foot injury, and now Natasha Cloud — Chicago’s best two-way guard and its most reliable table-setter — is questionable for Thursday with a knee issue of her own. That’s four meaningful absences for a team that was already 10 games under .500.

Washington, by contrast, is deep and versatile everywhere. Sonia Citron and Shakira Austin are both averaging 16.9 points a night, with Austin adding 9.5 rebounds and Kiki Iriafen chipping in 15.3 points and 9.3 boards of her own. Lauren Betts has been the most efficient piece in that frontcourt, shooting 55.2% from the floor, and the Mystics as a team have out-rebounded the league at 37.6 boards per game — tops in the WNBA. Chicago’s answer up front is Kamilla Cardoso, who’s quietly having a strong season at 14.8 points and 8.7 rebounds a game, but she’s essentially fighting a two- or three-on-one battle against Washington’s frontcourt rotation without Jackson or a full complement of guards to space the floor around her.

Under is 6-0 in the last six meetings between these two teams in Chicago.

That trend matters here. Neither team shoots the three particularly well — Washington is 14th in the league at 30.8%, Chicago 13th at 31.7% — and with Chicago’s offense already stretched thin by injuries, points could again be hard to find at Wintrust Arena. Sydney Taylor (13.8 PPG) and Cardoso are the only Sky players scoring in double figures with any consistency right now, and that’s a lot to ask against a Washington defense that’s held up well of late.

Natasha Cloud’s health is the swing factor for Chicago beyond the raw scoring numbers. She leads the Sky in assists at 4.9 per game and has been the closest thing to a steady hand running Chicago’s offense with Diggins gone. If her knee keeps her out or limited on Thursday, that pushes even more playmaking onto Courtney Vandersloot and rookie Jacy Sheldon, neither of whom has shown they can consistently create clean looks against a set Washington defense. Georgia Amoore has struggled shooting the ball for Washington at just 34.1% from the field, but she’s still averaging 3.4 assists and gives the Mystics another ball-handler to lean on late in games — something Chicago simply doesn’t have right now.

Washington also holds a meaningful rebounding edge that could compound over 40 minutes. The Mystics rank first in the league on the glass, and with Chicago missing multiple frontcourt-adjacent wings who’d normally help box out, second-chance opportunities should tilt heavily toward Washington. Cardoso is a legitimate anchor inside, but she can’t be everywhere — Shakira Austin and Kiki Iriafen combine for nearly 19 rebounds a game between them, and if Washington controls the offensive glass the way it has most of the season, Chicago’s already-limited offense gets fewer possessions to work with.

Prediction and Best Bet

Washington isn’t playing its best basketball right now, dropping its last game in Las Vegas, but Chicago’s roster attrition is the deciding factor in this one. The Mystics have more shooting, more rebounding, and simply more healthy bodies to throw at a Sky team trying to win with its fourth- and fifth-best guards.

The pick:

  1. Prediction: Washington 82, Chicago 76
  2. Best Bet: Washington Mystics -1.5

With the under trending hard in Chicago’s recent games and Washington’s rebounding advantage likely to limit second-chance points, don’t be surprised if this one stays under the total too.
