The WNBA’s best team walks into Washington missing its best player, and the Mystics are riding the hottest streak in the league to make them pay for it.

Quick take:

  • Pick: Washington Mystics +3.5
  • Why: Minnesota is without Napheesa Collier, and Washington has won seven straight
  • The number to watch: Mystics are 7-0 in their last seven games

Minnesota comes into CareFirst Arena at 30-7, comfortably first in the Western Conference and winners of five straight. But Napheesa Collier, the two-time reigning MVP runner-up, is out for this one on a rest designation, which strips a huge chunk of scoring and rim protection from a Lynx team that otherwise leans on Olivia Miles to do almost everything.

Washington, meanwhile, is playing its best basketball of the season at exactly the right time. The Mystics have won seven in a row and sit at 21-14, firmly in the mix in the East, and they’ll be plenty motivated to knock off the league’s top seed at home.

Vegas Still Trusts the Lynx, But the Number Tells a Story

Minnesota opened as roughly a 3.5-point favorite and the line has held there, with the Lynx priced at -164 on the moneyline and Washington getting +134. The total sits at 161.5. That’s a relatively modest number for a team that’s outscoring opponents by nearly nine points a game on the season — a sign the market is already pricing in Collier’s absence and respecting what Washington has been doing lately.

Miles Carries Minnesota, But Washington’s Depth Is the Difference-Maker

Without Collier, this is Olivia Miles’ team tonight. The rookie point guard is averaging 19.9 points, 6.2 assists and shooting 50.3% from the field, and she’s listed as day-to-day with an ankle issue but expected to play after exiting briefly earlier in the week. Kayla McBride and Courtney Williams give Minnesota secondary scoring, but the drop-off from Collier’s 19.1 points, 7.3 rebounds and 1.2 blocks per game is real, especially defensively in the paint.

Washington doesn’t have one player doing Collier’s job — it has four doing pieces of it. Sonia Citron is averaging 17.1 points and shooting 46.9% from the field, Shakira Austin is putting up 16.6 points and 9.5 rebounds a night while protecting the rim, and Kiki Iriafen has quietly been one of the more efficient scorers in the league at 15.0 points on 50.7% shooting. Georgia Amoore runs the offense and has been better as the season has worn on, and that group has been humming during the win streak — beating the Mercury, the Dream and the Sparks in the process.

Depth matters more than star power in a game like this. Michaela Onyenwere adds another 9.1 points a night off the bench, and Lauren Betts has been efficient in a smaller role, shooting better than 55% from the floor. That kind of balanced scoring attack is exactly the sort of thing that can wear down a Minnesota defense that’s used to funneling everything toward one primary scorer and letting Collier clean up mistakes at the rim. With her out, there’s simply less margin for error on defensive rotations, and a Washington team built around four players who can all put the ball in the basket is a tough matchup for exactly that reason.

Minnesota still has real advantages. The Lynx have been the league’s most complete team all season, and their +8.8 scoring margin isn’t a product of one player — Miles, McBride and Williams have all shown they can carry stretches of games. But road environments have been tougher on this group than home ones, and Washington’s crowd has been a factor during the win streak, with the building electric for each of the last several home wins.

Washington is 7-0 in its last seven games, outscoring opponents by an average margin that’s carried them from the middle of the East into the thick of the playoff race.

That kind of momentum matters against a shorthanded favorite. Minnesota’s defense, which ranks among the league’s stingiest at 83.4 points allowed per game, will be tested by a Mystics frontcourt that can score inside and out. Home crowds have energized this Washington group all month, and this feels like the type of spot — get-right favorite on the road, missing its best player — where a hot team covers even if it doesn’t pull the outright upset.

Prediction and Best Bet

Minnesota’s talent and depth should be enough to escape with a win even without Collier, but Washington’s win streak and Minnesota’s absence make the spread the play here rather than the moneyline. Bettors looking at FanDuel promo code offers before tip-off can find added value on either side of a number this thin.

The pick:

  2. Best Bet: Washington Mystics +3.5
