Two of the WNBA’s hottest teams collide in Atlanta, and somehow the East’s No. 1 seed is still the underdog.

Quick take:

  • Pick: Indiana Fever +2.5
  • Why: The Fever score more than anyone in the league and Atlanta’s defense hasn’t faced anything like Kelsey Mitchell and Caitlin Clark together in this kind of rhythm
  • The number to watch: Indiana’s 96.3 points per game, tops in the WNBA

Indiana (22-12) rolls into State Farm Arena on a three-game winning streak and sitting atop the Eastern Conference, while Atlanta (21-12) is right on their heels and has won two straight of its own. Half a game separates these two in the standings, and Sunday’s 5:00 PM ET tip could easily decide which team finishes the regular season with home-court advantage.

The Fever have been the league’s most explosive offense from wire to wire, and they’re riding a stretch where Stephanie White’s group has found another gear. Atlanta, meanwhile, has quietly built one of the WNBA’s stingiest defenses, and that clash of styles is exactly what makes this the marquee game of the week.

Why Vegas Still Trusts the Dream at Home

Atlanta opened as a 2.5-point favorite with a moneyline around -136, while Indiana sits at roughly +111 on the moneyline as the road side. The total has been bouncing between 187.5 and 189.5, reflecting a market that expects points but isn’t fully buying that Indiana’s offense will run wild against this particular defense. Anyone comparing lines before placing a DraftKings promo code bet should note books are leaning on Atlanta’s dominance as a short favorite this season — the Dream have covered nearly 70% of games when priced at -136 or shorter — while also respecting that Indiana has been live even as an underdog, going 8-1 in its last nine games catching points.

Mitchell and Clark Against Atlanta’s Defensive Identity

Kelsey Mitchell has been the engine of Indiana’s attack, sitting second in the WNBA at 24.3 points per game, and she’s paired with Caitlin Clark, who’s putting up 21.7 points and 8.3 assists a night while running the league’s most-watched offense. Both are probable for Sunday — Clark with a lingering back issue and Boston with a lower right leg injury she’s played through for weeks — but neither has missed real time recently, and Boston has still managed 16.2 points and 8.0 rebounds a game over her last nine outings despite the tag.

Atlanta counters with a defense that ranks fourth in the league in points allowed at 85.5 per game, anchored by Angel Reese’s relentless work on the glass — she’s averaging 15.8 points and 11.9 rebounds and has recorded 22 double-doubles this season. Allisha Gray leads Atlanta in scoring at 18.9 points per game and has been remarkably efficient, while Rhyne Howard adds 17.4 points and has hit 37.1% from three, giving the Dream multiple perimeter threats to space the floor around Reese and Jordin Canada, who’s dishing 7.6 assists a night.

Depth matters here too. Indiana has gotten timely scoring off the bench all season, and Sophie Cunningham has carved out a role as an energy piece who can hit open threes when defenses collapse on Clark and Mitchell. Atlanta’s rotation runs deeper on paper, but it’s also thinner at the top — outside of Gray, Howard, Reese and Canada, nobody in Atlanta’s regular rotation is averaging more than a handful of points, which puts even more pressure on that top four to carry the offensive burden for 40 minutes.

Both teams have been notably better at home than on the road this season, which makes State Farm Arena a real factor. Atlanta is 8-2 in its last 10 games overall, matching Indiana’s own 8-2 mark over the same stretch, so neither side is walking in cold. The Dream have also feasted on favorable matchups recently, blowing out Phoenix 104-69 in their last outing, while the Fever needed a strong second half from Clark and Boston to hold off Dallas 98-87 on Friday — a sign Indiana’s margin for error on the road may be thinner than its gaudy scoring average suggests.

Indiana is scoring 96.3 points per game, easily the best mark in the WNBA, against a Dream defense that ranks fourth in points allowed.

That’s the tension of this game in one number. Something has to give, and history suggests it tilts toward whichever team controls the pace. When these two met in June, Atlanta blitzed Indiana 113-96 in a track meet that favored the Dream’s depth. But back in early June, Indiana handled Atlanta 83-71 in a slower, more controlled game. Whoever dictates tempo Sunday likely wins.

Prediction and Best Bet

Indiana’s offense has been too consistent to fade, even on the road against a quality defense, and the number here feels a touch generous toward Atlanta given how the Fever have performed as underdogs down the stretch. Expect Clark and Mitchell to combine for at least 45 points and Indiana’s ball movement to find enough clean looks to keep this within a possession.

The pick:

  1. Prediction: Indiana 94, Atlanta 90
  2. Best Bet: Indiana Fever +2.5

Take the points with a team that’s been live in exactly these spots all season.
