Washington Mystics vs Las Vegas Aces Prediction: Can Washington Answer A’ja Wilson in the Rematch?

The Mystics look to bounce back from Tuesday's loss to the Aces, but A'ja Wilson and Las Vegas are favored to take control of the season series in this rematch at Michelob ULTRA Arena.

Washington already found out two nights ago what happens when A’ja Wilson decides a losing streak has gone on long enough, and now the Mystics have to walk right back into Michelob ULTRA Arena and try to solve it again.

Quick take:

  • Pick: Las Vegas Aces -7.5
  • Why: The Aces just ended Washington’s seven-game win streak at home and get the rematch 48 hours later with A’ja Wilson rolling
  • The number to watch: Wilson’s 26.3 points and 9.7 rebounds per game, both among the WNBA’s best

Washington (19-13) came into Las Vegas on Tuesday riding a seven-game winning streak, one of the best stretches of the Mystics’ season, only to leave with an 86-76 loss that snapped it cold. Now they’re back at Michelob ULTRA Arena for the second half of this home-and-home, and the Aces (23-11) are the ones with momentum. Las Vegas sits third in the Western Conference and has already shown this week it can shut down Washington’s balanced attack when it needs to.

Why the Line Barely Budged After Tuesday

Oddsmakers have Las Vegas as roughly a 7.5-point favorite with the moneyline hovering around -260 to -263, while Washington sits near +210 to +235 depending on the book. The total is set at 169.5. Given that the Aces just won this exact matchup by ten, the market clearly expects more of the same rather than treating this as a full reset — books are pricing in Las Vegas’ recent dominance in the series rather than assuming Washington bounces right back.

It’s a short number to digest for bettors who like to shop around, and a few sportsbooks have shaded the spread half a point in either direction, which is where checking a BetMGM promo code before placing anything can matter on a game with this tight a market. The total sitting under 170 also suggests oddsmakers expect a defensive, physical rematch rather than the track meet some Aces games can turn into.

A’ja Wilson Is the Whole Equation Right Now

Wilson is averaging 26.3 points, 9.7 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 2.1 blocks a game this season, numbers that have her in the middle of the MVP conversation again. In Tuesday’s win over these same Mystics, she posted 26 points, 13 rebounds, four blocks and two steals on 10-of-18 shooting, bouncing back from a rough 16-point outing against Minnesota a few days earlier. Jackie Young chipped in 25 points and eight assists in that same game, giving Las Vegas a second reliable scorer when Wilson draws extra defensive attention in the paint.

Washington isn’t without its own firepower. Sonia Citron has been in double figures for nine straight games and is averaging a career-high 17.1 points, 3.8 rebounds and 3.8 assists this season, while Shakira Austin (16.2 points, 9.6 rebounds) and rookie forward Kiki Iriafen (15.0 points, 9.2 rebounds) give the Mystics a legitimate frontcourt punch of their own. Citron actually led Washington with 19 points in Tuesday’s loss, but it came on an inefficient 7-of-15 clip, and the supporting cast couldn’t keep pace with Wilson and Young.

A’ja Wilson has scored in double figures with multiple blocks in six straight games, a stretch that lines up directly with the Aces’ recent surge.

That kind of two-way production is exactly why Las Vegas has been able to win in a variety of ways lately, whether it’s grinding out a close one or blowing a game open in the fourth quarter. Washington’s counter has to start with limiting Wilson’s second-chance opportunities, since Austin and Iriafen combined can’t match her individually on the boards without help.

Before Tuesday’s loss, Washington had won seven in a row, a run that included wins over Connecticut, Dallas twice, Atlanta and Phoenix, plus an overtime-flavored 100-99 thriller over these same Aces back on July 22. That earlier meeting is worth remembering: Washington actually beat Las Vegas at home despite Wilson dropping 38 points, which shows the Mystics can hang with this roster in the right building. The problem is this game isn’t in their building, and Las Vegas has been sharper defensively at home than on the road this season.

Georgia Amoore has quietly been steady running the point for Washington, distributing well enough to keep the offense organized, but the Mystics’ bench production has been inconsistent against elite frontcourts. Las Vegas, by contrast, gets scoring depth beyond Wilson and Young whenever Chelsea Gray is rolling, and this rematch sets up as a chance for the Aces to establish control of the season series two games to one.

Prediction and Best Bet

Washington has the pieces to make this respectable, especially with Citron capable of erupting for 20-plus on any given night, but beating the same team twice in three days on the road is a tall order against a player like Wilson who just re-established control of the series. Look for the Aces to lean on their frontcourt advantage again and cover comfortably.

The pick:

  1. Prediction: Las Vegas Aces 88, Washington Mystics 77
  2. Best Bet: Las Vegas Aces -7.5

The rematch angle favors the team that already broke serve, and Wilson’s current form makes fading the Aces at home a tough sell.
