Ducks vs. Oilers Game 5 Prediction: Can McDavid’s Oilers Survive Elimination at Rogers Place?

Anaheim leads 3-1 and heads to Rogers Place looking to complete one of the biggest upsets of the first round. Can Connor McDavid save Edmonton's season? Our Game 5 prediction.

One of the most stunning series of the 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs reaches its most dramatic moment Tuesday night when the Anaheim Ducks visit Rogers Place in Edmonton for Game 5 at 10:00 PM ET on TNT. The Ducks, picked by few to compete with the back-to-back Stanley Cup Finalists from Edmonton, hold a 3-1 series lead and are one win away from advancing past one of the most star-studded rosters in the Western Conference. The Oilers, who have appeared in consecutive Cup Finals and boast Connor McDavid — the most dangerous player on the planet — find themselves in an elimination game on home ice, needing a win simply to continue their playoff run. This is everything the NHL postseason is designed to produce, and all eyes in the hockey world will be locked on Rogers Place tonight.

The series has been defined by Anaheim’s surprising dominance after Edmonton won Game 1. The Ducks took Games 2, 3, and 4 consecutively, outscoring the Oilers 17-10 across those three games. Game 4 was the most controversial of the series — a 4-3 Anaheim overtime win that ended on a Ryan Poehling attempted pass that deflected off Darnell Nurse’s leg and through Tristan Jarry’s five-hole. The play was initially waved off but was later upheld after video review, giving Anaheim the lead in the series and sending Edmonton into an elimination scenario. The Oilers feel the outcome was unfair, but the game stands, and they must now win four consecutive games to advance — starting with one tonight at home.

Sharp Money Says Ducks, But Edmonton Opens as the Favorite

Despite Edmonton’s dire situation, oddsmakers still favor the Oilers at -172 for Game 5, with Anaheim available at +143. The puck line has Edmonton at -1.5 (+136) and Anaheim at +1.5 (-162). The over/under is set at 7, the highest of any game on the Tuesday slate, reflecting the offensive potential on both rosters. The opening line at DraftKings had Edmonton at -175 with Anaheim at +145, and the market has barely moved, suggesting the books are comfortable with the number. What makes this game truly fascinating from a betting perspective is the money flow. Despite 76 percent of bettors backing Edmonton on the moneyline, a full 69 percent of the actual money is on the Ducks. That is a clear indicator of sharp action — professional bettors are fading the public and backing Anaheim at plus money. When sharp money diverges from public percentage this dramatically, it deserves serious attention.

Cutter Gauthier, Power Play Dominance, and McDavid’s Last Stand

The story of this series has been Anaheim’s emergence as a genuinely elite team rather than a surprise contender. Cutter Gauthier has been exceptional, building on a regular season that saw him score 41 goals and rack up 69 points. He has continued that production into the playoffs and has become one of the most difficult forwards to defend in the league. Jackson LaCombe has been an unsung hero on the blue line with 48 assists during the regular season, providing the kind of reliable defensive play that allows Anaheim to attack in transition. Ryan Poehling and Beckett Sennecke have both contributed at crucial moments throughout the series, giving the Ducks the kind of depth production that has consistently outpaced Edmonton’s secondary scoring.

The Ducks’ power play has been the single most dominant special teams unit of the entire first round. Anaheim has converted on 6 of 12 power play opportunities in this series — a 50 percent clip that is virtually impossible to sustain but reflects how well their man advantage unit has been executing. The Oilers, despite having one of the most talented power play groups in the league with McDavid and Evan Bouchard quarterbacking the unit, have been unable to neutralize Anaheim’s man advantage. When Anaheim gets even a moderate power play opportunity, they have been virtually automatic, and that disparity has changed the complexion of multiple games in this series.

For Edmonton, Connor McDavid remains the singular most important factor. He posted 138 points and 48 goals during the regular season — historic production by any modern standard — and he has the ability to take over any single game and will a team to victory. McDavid in elimination games is a different animal. He competed in back-to-back Stanley Cup Finals, and that experience in high-pressure moments is genuine. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins provides veteran leadership alongside him, and Evan Bouchard’s ability to generate offense from the blue line gives the Oilers multiple sources of attack even without their secondary players performing at full capacity.

The goaltending picture, however, is not encouraging for Edmonton. Tristan Jarry is 0-1 in the series with a 3.84 GAA and an .895 save percentage through his appearances. The Game 4 overtime goal — however controversial — went through Jarry’s five-hole, and goalies who are struggling rarely benefit from extra time to think about their performance between games. Anaheim’s Lukas Dostal has been inconsistent as well at 3-1 with a 3.75 GAA and an .887 save percentage, but winning three of four games means the results have worked in the Ducks’ favor even when Dostal has been less than airtight.

Edmonton’s road record in the regular season was 3-10, which is a striking contrast to their home mark of 22-14-5. This Game 5 is at Rogers Place, meaning the Oilers get their best possible environment. But the Ducks are 19-20-2 on the road — respectable enough for a playoff team — and they have already demonstrated they can handle the pressure of a Rogers Place crowd by winning Game 2 in Edmonton. Anaheim is not intimidated, and that matters enormously in this situation.

Prediction and Best Bet

McDavid and the Oilers will not go quietly, and Rogers Place will be the loudest it has been all season with Edmonton’s playoff survival on the line. The Oilers have the home advantage and the greatest player in the world in their lineup. But Anaheim has been the better team for three consecutive games, their power play has been automatic, and the sharp money is clearly backing the Ducks at plus money. The weight of evidence points to another Ducks performance that tests Edmonton’s ability to respond, and Jarry’s inconsistency remains a serious concern for a team that needs him to be outstanding. In a tight, physical game, Anaheim steals it on the road and advances.

  • Prediction: Anaheim Ducks 4, Edmonton Oilers 3
  • Best Bet: Anaheim Ducks on the moneyline (+143)

The Anaheim moneyline at +143 is the sharpest play on the board in Game 5. The Ducks have been the better team in three straight games, their power play is the best in the series, and 69 percent of the money from sophisticated bettors is on their side despite the Oilers being installed as home favorites. McDavid is always a threat to single-handedly change the outcome, but the overall roster and structural advantages for Anaheim are compelling enough to take the plus money and back the upset completion.
