A.J. Brown is back, and the entire NFL world is watching. The New England Patriots wide receiver returned to the lineup Sunday against the New York Jets at Gillette Stadium, ending a four-game absence caused by a high-ankle sprain, and his comeback has made him the most talked-about name in football during the Week 6 slate.

Brown arrived in New England as the marquee offseason splash, acquired from the Philadelphia Eagles in a June 1 blockbuster that sent a 2028 first-round pick and a 2027 fifth-round pick back to Philadelphia. The three-time Pro Bowler wore a Patriots uniform for barely a quarter of football before the injury hit. He went down in the season-opening loss to the Seahawks in Seattle after catching three passes for 26 yards, and the Patriots placed him on injured reserve.

From Injured Reserve to the Starting Lineup

New England made it official Saturday, activating Brown from injured reserve ahead of the AFC East matchup. He was listed as questionable with the ankle injury after limited practices Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, but the uncertainty ended Sunday morning when he was listed as active. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported the expectation that Brown would handle a good amount of snaps, a notable detail given his workload in Philadelphia. In 16 appearances last season, including the playoffs, he played at least 87 percent of the offensive snaps in all but two games.

The timing could hardly be better for a Patriots offense that has found its rhythm. Quarterback Drake Maye came into the game having thrown seven touchdown passes against one interception over his previous two outings, wins over Buffalo and Las Vegas in which New England scored 74 combined points. That included a 45-17 rout of the Raiders in which Maye matched his single-game high with five total touchdowns. Adding a receiver with Brown’s physicality and contested-catch ability to that mix is exactly what offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels was hoping for.

Brown’s Gravity Already Showing Up

The box score will not show it, but Brown’s presence was felt early. On Maye’s first completion of the afternoon, a 42-yard touchdown strike to Romeo Doubs, a Jets safety appeared to bite hard toward Brown, leaving Doubs free over the top. Boston Herald Patriots reporter Andrew Callahan pointed to the play as proof that Brown’s gravity was already opening up the offense. Brown himself was targeted twice and could not bring either one in, including a well-thrown deep ball down the sideline from Maye, so there is still some rust to shake off.

McDaniels had previewed the effect earlier in the week, noting that when a defense puts two people on one receiver, someone else gets a single opportunity. He pointed to the way opponents doubled Stefon Diggs in last year’s Jets game as an example. Doubs, who signed a four-year, $68 million deal with New England this offseason, is the first beneficiary, and tight ends and slot receivers could follow.

The game itself stayed competitive. The Patriots built a 17-3 halftime lead before the Jets answered with ten unanswered points in the second half, including a 48-yard touchdown catch by Omar Cooper, to pull within 17-13 at one point. Cornerback Christian Gonzalez also returned for New England after missing two games, giving the Patriots two key pieces back in one afternoon.

What Brown’s Return Means Going Forward

For fantasy managers, Brown is rostered in roughly 96 percent of ESPN and Yahoo leagues, and many of them have been patiently stashing him for a month. His target volume over the next few weeks will be one of the biggest storylines in the sport. For bettors, a healthy Brown changes how books and sharp players view New England’s passing game, and player props on receiving yards and touchdowns are worth monitoring at any of the top sportsbooks as his snap count climbs.

The Patriots, defending AFC champions, are looking to turn a slow start into a run at the division. With Maye surging, Doubs producing and Gonzalez back in the secondary, the return of one of the league’s most physical receivers gives New England the kind of offensive ceiling few teams can match. If Brown stays healthy, the Patriots could be a very difficult out in the AFC, and fans hoping to back them can compare the latest DraftKings promo code offers before the next kickoff.

Brown’s first game back was not a statement stat line, but it was a statement all the same. The Patriots offense is whole again, and for a player who spent four weeks watching from the sideline, Sunday was only the beginning.
