Brock Bowers Injury Update: Raiders All-Pro TE Out for Season Opener After Meniscus Surgery Ahead of Dolphins Game

Raiders All-Pro TE Brock Bowers underwent a meniscus trim Tuesday and will miss "a game or two" to start 2026, putting his availability for Sunday's opener vs. Miami in serious doubt.

Brock Bowers underwent a meniscus trim on his surgically sensitive knee Tuesday in Dallas, and the Raiders’ All-Pro tight end is now expected to miss “a game or two” to open the 2026 season, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter and NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. The timing could hardly be worse for Las Vegas, which hosts the Miami Dolphins on Sunday in a season opener that suddenly looks very different without its best offensive weapon on the field.

Bowers, still just 23, has quickly established himself as one of the league’s premier tight ends since Las Vegas drafted him out of Georgia. He earned his second consecutive Pro Bowl nod in 2025 despite a knee issue that limited him to 12 games and eventually landed him on injured reserve for the final two weeks of the season. Even in a shortened campaign, he posted 64 receptions for 680 yards and seven touchdowns, numbers that made him a top-three fantasy tight end target in offseason drafts typically going off the board in the third or fourth round.

A Familiar and Frustrating Injury

According to reports, Bowers got “banged up a little” during training camp last week, with the injury diagnosed shortly after and surgery subsequently scheduled with Dr. Daniel Cooper. Notably, it’s the same knee that sidelined him for much of last season — he suffered a PCL injury and bone bruise in Week 1 of 2025 against the New England Patriots that he tried to play through before Las Vegas eventually shut him down. First-year head coach Klint Kubiak was asked directly about Bowers’ availability for Sunday during a Wednesday press conference before news of the surgery broke, offering only a measured, “We’re expecting to have all of our guys ready for Sunday.” That kind of gamesmanship aside, all indications point to Bowers sitting out the opener at minimum, with Weeks 2 and 3 also in question as the Raiders turn the page to road trips against the Los Angeles Chargers and New Orleans Saints.

The silver lining, if there is one, is that a meniscus trim is a considerably less invasive procedure than the injury that cost him significant time a year ago. Kirk Cousins, recently named the Week 1 starting quarterback, will now open his Raiders tenure without his top pass-catching option — a tough break for a rebuilt offense trying to find its footing in Kubiak’s system.

Who Steps Up, and What It Means for Fantasy Managers

Michael Mayer profiles as the obvious next man up. The 25-year-old appeared in four of the five games Bowers missed a season ago and logged snap shares north of 90% in each, giving Las Vegas a credible in-house replacement rather than a scramble. Expect increased target share for wideouts Jack Bech, Jaylen Nailor and Tre Tucker as well, as the Raiders spread the ball around in Bowers’ absence.

For fantasy managers who spent premium draft capital on Bowers as a locked-in TE1 or top-tier TE2, the news forces an early scramble for a short-term replacement, and it’s worth checking the latest lines and injury-driven line movement before locking in Week 1 lineups — resources like Expected Value (EV) Calculator can help sharpen those decisions when a marquee player’s absence shifts a game’s total or spread. Dolphins backers, meanwhile, just got a notable break: Miami’s defense won’t have to account for one of the NFL’s most dangerous mismatch weapons in Bowers’ first potential appearance of the season.

The Raiders will provide more clarity as the week progresses and an official injury report is filed, but for now, the expectation across league sources is that Las Vegas opens 2026 without its best player against a divisional-style, must-win atmosphere at Allegiant Stadium. How quickly Bowers returns — and how the same knee responds to a second procedure in less than a year — will be one of the more closely watched storylines of the Raiders’ early season.
