Giants Extend Jameis Winston, Jon Runyan Jr. in Same-Day Deals That Clear Cap Space Before Week 1

The Giants extended backup QB Jameis Winston and starting LG Jon Runyan Jr. through 2028 in same-day deals that also cleared tight 2026 cap space.

The New York Giants moved quickly to lock down two veteran contributors ahead of the regular season, agreeing to contract extensions with backup quarterback Jameis Winston and starting left guard Jon Runyan Jr. on the same day, Sunday, Sept. 6, 2026. Winston’s two-year extension is worth $13 million, while Runyan’s two-year deal comes in at $22 million with $21.5 million guaranteed. ESPN’s Adam Schefter and NFL insider Jordan Schultz both confirmed the terms.

Both players were entering the final year of their existing contracts before the extensions, meaning New York moved on retaining them well ahead of any looming free agency decisions. Winston, 32, arrived in New York last offseason and was set to earn just under $4 million in 2026 before the new money kicked in. Runyan, 29, was in the last season of a three-year, $30 million deal and had even been mentioned as a potential cap casualty heading into training camp before instead cementing his spot as a foundational piece of the Giants’ offensive line.

Cap Relief Was Part of the Calculus

The timing wasn’t a coincidence. According to Over the Cap figures cited by multiple outlets, the Giants sat roughly $1.18 million to $1.76 million over the 2026 salary cap limit heading into Sunday, with reporting from ESPN, the New York Times, the New York Post and Pro Football Rumors all noting the club needed to find room before the season officially began. Restructuring Winston’s and Runyan’s deals into multi-year extensions allowed New York to convert a chunk of each player’s 2026 base salary into signing-bonus money that can be prorated across future seasons, immediately shedding cap charges without cutting anyone from the roster.

Winston’s extension keeps him under contract through 2028 as Jaxson Dart’s backup, giving the Giants a proven, experienced arm behind their young starter for multiple seasons. Runyan’s deal similarly runs through 2028 and locks in the left guard spot next to Dart’s blind side protection, with the $21.5 million guaranteed reflecting the bulk of what’s now owed him beyond this season’s original $9 million salary. Reports pegged Runyan’s new money in new guarantees at closer to $12.5 million once his previously-owed 2026 salary is accounted for, still a significant show of long-term commitment from general manager Joe Schoen’s front office.

What It Means for Giants Betting Markets

Neither move figures to shift New York’s outlook dramatically on its own, but roster stability behind a second-year quarterback matters to bettors evaluating the Giants’ season-long numbers. Entering Week 1 against Dallas, sportsbooks had the Giants’ win total set at 7.5, with the over/under drawing heavy square money on the over given a three-and-a-half-game jump from last year’s four-win finish. New York’s odds to make the playoffs sat in the +255 range, its odds to win the NFC East hovered around +600, and its Super Bowl number was priced near +7000 — all figures that reflect a team still viewed as a long shot but not dismissed outright.

Keeping Winston in the fold specifically protects against the kind of quarterback-room volatility that can tank a season total bet in a hurry; if Dart were to miss time, the sportsbooks’ win total math leaned on the assumption that a credible backup, not a rookie or journeyman, would be under center. Locking up Runyan similarly shores up the offensive line depth chart the market is pricing when it handicaps how much protection Dart gets on early downs. For bettors tracking the Giants’ win total and division futures throughout September, the fact that New York addressed both spots without any corresponding roster losses is a modest positive signal — even if it’s unlikely to move the number outright before Sunday night’s opener.
