The signing reunites Allen with Steichen, who coached him as the Chargers’ offensive coordinator in 2020 and as the team’s interim playcaller in 2019. Allen made the Pro Bowl in both of those seasons, and reports indicate the two have stayed in close contact throughout the summer as Indianapolis searched for a veteran answer at receiver. At 34, Allen enters his 14th NFL season and will suit up for his third team in as many years after brief stops with the Chicago Bears in 2024 and a return to the Chargers in 2025.

Allen brings a résumé few remaining free agents could match. He caught 81 passes for 777 yards and four touchdowns on 122 targets across 17 games with the Chargers last season, marking his ninth consecutive year clearing 700 receiving yards. He’s also the Chargers’ all-time leader in receptions with 956. Steichen had publicly acknowledged the team was “always looking” to add at receiver, and with Allen sitting as the top remaining name on the market, the fit became obvious for both sides just weeks before the regular season opens.
