Here’s the bet: Will Aaron Donald be the NFL’s Defensive Player of the Year? The odds are +900 (9-1), up from +750. That means a bet of $100 would get you back $900. Or, on a smaller scale, a bet of $10 would win you $90.
Donald, the Los Angeles Rams defensive tackle, won the award in both 2017 and 2018 before New England’s Stephen Gilmore won the award last season.
While it’s not generally a smart bet to pick one player out of an entire field to win an award. This bet isn’t a bad one, especially at those odds.
Donald is just 28 years old and last year when he did not win the award he arguably had a better year than in ’17 when he did win it.
Last season Donald had 12 1/2 sacks, 20 tackles for a loss, forced two fumbles and recovered one. In 2017, he had 11 sacks, 15 tackles for a loss, forced five fumbles and recovered one.
This will be Donald’s third season under the six-year, $135 million contract he signed in August, 2018. His first two years he showed no signs of slippage or being comfortable. So why not risk a few bucks at 9-1.
