Lando Norris’ Stunning Pole Turns to Podium Heartbreak as Antonelli Wins Historic Spanish GP
Lando Norris stunned everyone with a last-gasp pole lap at F1's new Madring circuit, but a mistimed McLaren pit stop handed Kimi Antonelli the win as Norris salvaged third on the podium.

Lando Norris produced one of the great qualifying laps of his career to snatch pole position for Formula 1’s inaugural Spanish Grand Prix at the Madring on Sunday, only to watch the race slip away in the pit lane. Kimi Antonelli capitalized on a poorly timed McLaren pit stop to win his eighth race of the 2026 season, while Norris fought back from fifth to complete the podium in third behind Max Verstappen.
Norris entered the weekend already building momentum, having won two of his last three starts at the Hungaroring and Zandvoort. His Saturday lap around Madrid’s new 5.416km street-style circuit was, in his own words, “probably one of the best laps I’ve done ever in my career” — a 1:31.824 that beat championship leader Antonelli by just 0.011 seconds and Verstappen by 0.140 seconds, marking his third pole in four races. It capped a stunning turnaround for McLaren after Norris had lost most of Friday’s second practice session to a gearbox issue.
A Race Undone by Strategy
Norris converted pole into control early, pulling out a lead of more than six seconds by lap 14 of the 57-lap race at F1’s newest circuit. But a virtual safety car intervention flipped the entire complexion of the afternoon. McLaren brought Norris in for service just as the VSC period was ending, and a slow seven-second pit stop compounded the damage, dropping the Briton from the lead all the way down to fifth place. Antonelli, who had pitted a lap earlier under more favorable timing, inherited the lead and never relinquished it.
Norris didn’t fold. He hunted down George Russell and then Charles Leclerc across the closing laps, eventually working his way onto the podium and closing to within a second of Verstappen’s Red Bull on multiple occasions in the final stint. A locked brake on lap 55, however, ended any hope of snatching second, and Norris crossed the line 5.089 seconds behind Antonelli and 0.738 seconds behind Verstappen. Leclerc held off Russell for fourth after gambling on a late stop for fresh soft tires, while Liam Lawson rounded out the top six in his third race back with Red Bull. Franco Colapinto and Oscar Piastri took seventh and eighth for Alpine and McLaren, respectively, rounding out the point-scoring positions on a day when overtaking at the tight, semi-street Madring circuit proved difficult all afternoon.
Antonelli’s reaction after climbing from the car said everything about how much the win meant with the title race heating up. The Italian sprinted straight to his Mercedes crew to celebrate before acknowledging that the VSC timing had essentially decided the race for him. “That might just be my best one,” Norris had said of his pole lap on Saturday, and while Sunday didn’t deliver the fairytale finish, the podium was still McLaren’s third top-three result in as many races and a reminder that the papaya cars remain genuine title threats whenever strategy breaks their way.
Standings Tighten as Season Enters Final Stretch
The result was Antonelli’s eighth win of the year and extended his drivers’ championship lead over Mercedes teammate Russell to 81 points, with nine races remaining on the calendar. Mercedes also padded its constructors’ advantage, moving well clear of Ferrari in the manufacturers’ standings after Lewis Hamilton’s afternoon ended prematurely with a brake failure that forced retirement — one of several notable DNFs on the day alongside Carlos Sainz and Lance Stroll, who also failed to finish at the demanding new venue.
For Norris, the podium keeps him within striking distance in fourth place in the drivers’ standings, even as the near-miss stings after a weekend where his car was clearly the class of the field for long stretches. McLaren’s strategy call will be scrutinized heading into the next round, but the pole position and recovery drive reinforced that Norris remains one of the sport’s biggest threats down the stretch.
