Allwyn UK CEO Andria Vidler Steps Down, Phil Walker Named Interim Chief Executive

Allwyn UK has a new leader at the top of the National Lottery operator, at least for now. Andria Vidler is stepping down as CEO of Allwyn UK effective 7 September, with industry veteran Phil Walker stepping in as interim chief executive while the company searches for a permanent successor.

The change was announced Wednesday and comes just under three years after Vidler took the helm in October 2023, shortly before Allwyn’s 10-year license to operate the UK National Lottery officially began. Her exit marks the end of a tenure defined by a major operational overhaul of one of the world’s most recognizable lottery brands.

A Transition Built Around a Turnaround

Vidler, a veteran media executive who previously led EMI and publisher Centaur Media before moving into gambling, oversaw Allwyn’s transition into the National Lottery operator role and what Allwyn UK Chair Justin King described as a “much-needed and long-overdue transformation” of the lottery’s operations. King and Vidler have agreed that now is “the right moment for her to step down,” according to the company’s announcement, and she will stay on in an advisory capacity through the end of October to help ensure a smooth handover.

Her replacement brings a very different resume to the role. Phil Walker spent six years in senior positions at William Hill, including stints as UK & Ireland managing director, online managing director, and chief commercial officer — a run during which the sportsbook grew market share, revenue, and profit across both its digital and retail channels. He was most recently a non-executive director at City Gaming Limited. Unlike Vidler, whose background was rooted in media rather than betting and gaming, Walker arrives with direct gambling-industry experience, something Allwyn says will support the National Lottery’s push toward further digital transformation.

What Comes Next for Allwyn UK

Walker framed the move as both a professional opportunity and a personal one. “As a long-standing National Lottery player, I know first-hand the difference it makes to communities across the UK and this is a huge part of what attracted me to the role,” he said. “It will be a real honour to help build on the progress already made.”

For now, Walker’s mandate is squarely about continuity — Allwyn UK has framed his appointment as a bridge while it runs a formal search for Vidler’s permanent successor. But with gambling operators increasingly leaning on regulated, mainstream products like prediction markets and lottery-adjacent offerings to diversify beyond traditional sports betting, who ultimately lands the permanent Allwyn UK job could carry weight well beyond the National Lottery’s own operations.
