Betfred Weighs Slot Arcades as It Closes 132 UK Betting Shops

Betfred is exploring a pivot into UK slot arcades as gambling tax hikes force the closure of 132 betting shops and over 600 job cuts.

Betfred is weighing a move into the slot arcade business as the UK bookmaker works through the closure of 132 betting shops and the loss of more than 600 jobs. NEXT.io reports that the Warrington-based operator, founded by brothers Fred and Peter Done, is exploring plans to operate Adult Gaming Centres (AGCs) as part of a broader rethink of its retail footprint.

The closures, announced on July 31, affect roughly 10% of Betfred’s UK estate and will leave the company with around 1,100 shops once the consultation process concludes in September. Betfred CEO Jo Whittaker did not mince words about the pressure driving the decision, pointing to a fiscal and regulatory environment she says has made it “impossible to keep trading all our shops.”

A Tax Squeeze Reshaping the High Street

The closures come directly on the heels of major tax hikes confirmed in last year’s UK autumn budget. Remote Gaming Duty jumped from 21% to 40% effective April 1, 2026, and a new 25% online sports betting duty is set to arrive in 2027, covering every sport except horse racing. Layer in higher employer National Insurance contributions and continued wage inflation, and Whittaker says the math simply stopped working for over 130 locations.

“These are well-run shops, staffed by dedicated colleagues, and it is incredibly hard to see any of them close, but the current fiscal and regulatory environment has made it impossible to keep trading all our shops,” Whittaker said. Fred Done has separately called the tax changes the biggest threat to the UK betting sector in his 57 years in the business.

Betfred Isn’t Alone in Retreating from the High Street

Betfred’s contraction mirrors a wider retrenchment among UK bookmakers. Rivals including Paddy Power, William Hill, and Evoke have all shuttered dozens of shops over the past year as they try to offset the same tax pressures. The sector’s shift away from physical retail has been building for years, but the scale of this year’s duty increases appears to be accelerating shop closures across the board rather than just trimming at the margins.

Why AGCs Could Be the Next Move

Pivoting toward slot arcades would let Betfred repurpose its high street presence and staffing expertise for a gaming category that isn’t subject to the same betting duty structure hammering its sportsbook shops. AGCs operate under a separate licensing and tax framework in the UK, giving operators like Betfred a way to keep serving walk-in customers in town centers even as traditional bookmaking margins get squeezed from multiple directions. It’s a similar logic to what’s driving convergence between sports betting and casino gaming products in other markets, where operators are chasing every avenue to keep customers engaged in one ecosystem. For US bettors comparing that kind of diversified approach, several DraftKings promo code offers already bundle sportsbook and casino perks together.

No formal AGC plans have been finalized, and the consultation with affected Betfred staff is still ongoing. But the exploration signals that even one of the UK’s most storied family-run bookmakers — the Done brothers have a combined net worth estimated at £3.61 billion — sees the current tax environment as forcing a genuine strategic pivot, not just a round of cost-cutting.
