The Brazilian joint venture behind BetMGM’s Latin American operations is moving to expand its footprint in Brazil’s regulated online gambling market with the acquisition of an online video bingo developer. Boa Lion, the company formed by MGM Resorts International and Brazilian media giant Grupo Globo to operate the BetMGM brand in Brazil, has agreed to acquire Bingão do Brasil for an undisclosed sum, adding a bingo-focused product to its growing portfolio.

The deal was disclosed through a notice published by Brazil’s Administrative Council for Economic Defence, known as CADE, in the country’s Official Gazette. The acquisition covers 100% of Bingão do Brasil, and the transaction remains subject to review and approval by CADE before it can close. Brazil’s antitrust authority monitors mergers and acquisitions that may affect market concentration in regulated industries.

A Strategic Bet on Bingo in a Maturing Market

Bingão do Brasil is a pre-commercial stage company focused on developing video bingo games for the Brazilian online gambling market. The company does not currently operate a fixed-odds sports betting website and has not yet launched its games commercially. MGM and Globo are acquiring the development-stage asset as a way to position themselves in the bingo vertical, which is explicitly regulated under Brazil’s gambling framework as established by Law 14.790/2023 and subsequent regulations from the Secretaria de Prêmios e Apostas.

The seller’s ownership structure has drawn attention in part because of the identity of one of the investors. Bingão do Brasil’s shareholders include L.Eva Participações, a holding company whose partners include Luciano Huck, one of Brazil’s most recognizable television personalities and a household name among the country’s media-watching public. The involvement of a celebrity investor with deep ties to Grupo Globo’s media empire underscores the degree to which Brazil’s gambling market is attracting capital from across the country’s entertainment and business communities.

BetMGM’s Brazil Strategy Takes Shape

The acquisition builds on the foundation MGM and Globo laid when they created Boa Lion and launched BetMGM in Brazil following the country’s regulatory overhaul. Brazil’s government formalized its online betting market in 2023 and has since moved to issue licenses and build a comprehensive regulatory regime, creating one of the world’s most consequential new iGaming jurisdictions. With more than 200 million people and one of the highest rates of sports betting engagement in the world, Brazil has attracted significant investment from major international operators.

MGM’s partnership with Grupo Globo was designed specifically to overcome the local knowledge and media distribution challenges that have tripped up international operators entering Brazil without a domestic partner. Globo controls Brazil’s dominant broadcast network and several major streaming and digital properties, giving BetMGM unparalleled brand visibility in a market where name recognition drives player acquisition.

“The acquisition of Bingão do Brasil is part of the long-term strategy of BetMGM to expand its digital entertainment ecosystem in Brazil, investing in categories with growth potential within a regulated market,” the company said in a statement. BetMGM emphasized that the deal involves only the online gaming segment and has no connection to ongoing legislative discussions about physical casinos or physical bingo halls in Brazil.

What This Means for Global Gaming Operators

The Bingão do Brasil acquisition reflects a broader pattern among international gaming operators building diversified product portfolios in newly regulated Latin American markets. Online bingo, while less prominent in North American markets, holds a strong cultural position in parts of Latin America, and Brazil’s regulatory framework explicitly carves out space for it as a distinct product category.

For U.S. bettors looking to engage with BetMGM on domestic soil, the operator’s North American sportsbook and casino products continue to expand. The BetMGM Promo Code page offers details on current sign-up bonuses for eligible U.S. players. The deal is pending CADE approval, and no financial terms have been disclosed. Once cleared, it will give Boa Lion a product asset to build out as Brazil’s regulated online gambling market continues to mature and attract players to licensed platforms.
