Arch Manning Trends Nationwide as Texas Hosts No. 1 Ohio State in Revenge Rematch

Arch Manning is the biggest name in college football right now, and it has nothing to do with a highlight-reel play. The Texas Longhorns quarterback has become the No. 1 trending sports topic in the country as he heads into Saturday night’s marquee showdown against top-ranked Ohio State, a rematch of last season’s 14-7 loss that exposed the growing pains of his first full year as a starter.

Manning enters the matchup fresh off a dominant season-opening performance, completing 20 of 27 passes for 305 yards and four touchdowns with one interception in a 59-7 rout of Texas State on September 5. It was the kind of efficient, explosive outing that has fueled Heisman Trophy buzz and reignited conversations about where Manning stands among the top quarterback prospects for the 2027 NFL Draft.

A Measuring-Stick Rematch

Saturday’s game at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium marks the third straight season Texas and Ohio State have squared off, and the stakes could not be higher for Manning personally. Last year’s meeting in Columbus was rough: Manning completed just 9 of 15 passes for 38 yards with an interception through three quarters before Ohio State built a 14-0 lead. He rallied late, finishing 17 of 30 for 170 yards and a touchdown, but the Buckeyes held on for the win in what was Manning’s first career road start as QB1.

Ohio State has won each of the last two meetings between the programs, including a 28-14 victory in the College Football Playoff semifinal following the 2024 season. This time, Manning gets the rematch at home, with 15 starts of experience now under his belt and a deeper, more explosive supporting cast around him, including tight end Cam Coleman, who hauled in two touchdown catches in the opener. On the other side, Ohio State quarterback Julian Sayin and star receiver Jeremiah Smith present one of the toughest tests in the country, though Smith has managed just seven combined catches for 46 yards across the last two meetings with Texas.

NFL Scouts Are Watching Closely

Beyond this year’s College Football Playoff race, Saturday’s game doubles as a critical evaluation point for Manning’s NFL future. He is eligible to declare for the 2027 draft, and CBS Sports reported this week that NFL personnel see a player with elite physical tools who still needs to refine his accuracy, timing and processing before he is a lock as a top pick. One NFL front-office staffer put it bluntly: “He’s still got a ways to go,” while adding that Manning has “all the physical tools and the wiring and the pedigree” to eventually become a first-round talent.

That evaluation lines up with Manning’s overall body of work. Across parts of four seasons at Texas, he has completed 63.0% of his passes for 4,215 yards, 37 touchdowns and 10 interceptions, adding several more scores on the ground, including a signature 60-yard touchdown run in the Longhorns’ 41-27 Citrus Bowl win over Michigan last December. A strong showing against Ohio State’s defense, coordinated by Matt Patricia, would go a long way toward silencing the doubters before the season gets much older.

What’s Next for Texas

No. 5 Texas enters Saturday at 1-0, with No. 1 Ohio State also unbeaten to open the year. A win would be a signature moment for Manning and the Longhorns’ playoff hopes, while a repeat of last season’s struggles would keep the “not there yet” narrative alive for at least another week. Beyond Saturday, Texas has a manageable stretch on paper, hosting UTSA on September 19 before a road trip to face No. 18 Tennessee on September 26, giving Manning a chance to build momentum regardless of how the Ohio State game unfolds.

For now, all eyes are on Austin, where a sold-out crowd and a national television audience will watch Manning try to author a different ending to the same matchup that once exposed his rough edges. Given the volume of national coverage, NFL scouting attention and betting market interest surrounding the game, it’s easy to see why Manning is dominating sports conversation nationwide this weekend — for fans wanting to follow the betting angle, more on where sports wagering stands in Texas can be found on Bettors Insider’s Online Sportsbooks in Texas guide.
