Boston College Golden Eagles vs. Miami Hurricanes, 2:30 pm Eastern

The Pick: Boston College +8 (-110), bet $11 to win $10

The tipping point for me is getting 8 points and not just 7.5. That’s a little more leeway for a Boston College team that has had an exhilarating couple of days. The Golden Eagles blew out Pitt on Tuesday, then came back from a ten-point deficit against Wake Forest yesterday to pull off the upset in overtime. Today they face a Miami team for whom rest is not necessarily an advantage. The Hurricanes are 3-7 against the spread when they have more rest than their opponent. Miami beat BC on March 2, 81-70, but they’re not a trustworthy favorite: 8-12 ATS. I was wrong about yesterday’s game only in the sense that Boston College was able to win, not just cover. But I was wrong while cashing in. I think BC fights valiantly again today against a Miami team that’s not used to being in a situation where they’re supposed to win.

Virginia Tech Hokies vs. Notre Dame Fighting Irish, 7 pm Eastern

The Pick: Notre Dame +1.5 (-110), bet $16.50 to win $15

Virginia Tech outlasted Clemson last night, winning in overtime on a buzzer-beating three-pointer by Darius Maddox. I watched the entire game, and hopefully, Notre Dame Head Coach Mike Brey did too and realized that if he has his team guard the three-point line, they should win. The Hokies went 12-28 from three (42.9%) which probably wouldn’t happen again even if they weren’t going on less than a day’s rest. Virginia Tech beat the Irish on Jan. 15, 79-73, true, but they had over two days rest then, and they shot 50% (10-20) from three on that night. I’m assuming Brey was watching that night. The Hokies won a great game last night; they’ll be a little flatter tonight.

Virginia Cavaliers vs. North Carolina Tar Heels, 9:30 pm Eastern

The Pick: North Carolina -182, bet $36.40 to win $20

Talk about flat. It was clear, obvious even, that last night Virginia was trying to balance winning an important game in an effort to make the tournament, and sticking their finger in my eye again. The Cavaliers had to scrap and claw against a Louisville team with nothing to play for, and it was Kihei Clark (as I predicted) who dragged his team to the finish line with clutch shot after clutch shot. But they put it all out there last night, they had to, and they won’t have enough left to beat a North Carolina team that’s coming off a huge win at Duke in Coach K’s last game in Cameron. The Tar Heels outscore the Cavaliers by more than 15 points per game (78.6 vs. 63.2) and while Virginia makes you play slower with their defense, that’s just too much firepower to ignore this late in the season. I’ll stay away from the spread and bank on North Carolina’s talent and size taking them home tonight.
