Notre Dame Fighting Irish at Wake Forest Demon Deacons, 1 pm Eastern
The Pick: Wake Forest -5.5 (-110), bet $11 to win $10
I believe Wake Forest is the second-best team in the ACC behind Duke. The Pomeroy rankings don’t agree with me (it has Virginia Tech second) but it does have the Demon Deacons 36th while Notre Dame is 60th. More important (to gamblers, anyway), Wake Forest is 10-4 against the spread as a home favorite and 17-10 ATS overall. The Irish are a solid team, but Wake just lost a tough one on the road to Duke and will be aching to make up for it.
North Carolina Tar Heels at Virginia Tech Hokies, 4 pm Eastern
The Pick: North Carolina +4.5 (-109), bet $10.87 to win $10
Despite some bad, bad losses this season, I continue to think North Carolina is a sleeping, well, if not giant, then a sleeping pretty tall dude. The Tar Heels average 78.3 points per game (7.7 more than Virginia Tech) and their adjusted offense is 22nd in the nation. Even though the Hokies’ offense is 19th, I think North Carolina has a major edge with size and rebounding (39.7 vs. 31.8 boards per game). In the last matchup between these two teams, UNC beat the Hokies by 10. Virginia Tech has won six in a row, but four of those games were against the dregs of the conference. I think UNC plays well today.
Virginia Cavaliers at Miami Hurricanes, 5 pm Eastern
The Pick: Miami -2 (-110), bet $11 to win $10
This spread is too influenced by the previous game between these two teams. Two weeks ago, Virginia beat Miami 71-58. But aside from that game, the Hurricanes are 8-2 against the spread in their last ten, still have a Top-20 adjusted offense, and today will be seeking their 20th win. If I may be forgiven a double-negative, twenty wins in a power conference is not nothing, and I expect Miami will be going all out to get it. I know, I know, the last words on my deathbed will be, “Fade the Cavaliers,” but they have a 4-6 record on the road and score 7.1 fewer points per game than Miami. Miami takes revenge at home today.
Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets at Pittsburgh Panthers, 7 pm Eastern
The Pick: Pittsburgh -3 (-110), bet $11 to win $10
Pittsburgh has won three in a row, including a big win at North Carolina on Wednesday. While I don’t think the Panthers are a good team, I do think they play hard and are scrappy. Besides, Georgia Tech is not any better. This is a matchup between two teams at the bottom of the ACC, so there’s a certain amount of pride at stake here. I think the Panthers do enough to take care of business at home.
