Boston leads 3-1 and hosts Philadelphia in a potential series-clinching Game 5 at TD Garden. Tatum is playing the best basketball of his life. Our prediction and best bet.

The Boston Celtics are one win away from sweeping past the Philadelphia 76ers in the first round of the 2026 NBA Playoffs, and they will have the opportunity to close out the series in front of their home crowd at TD Garden on Tuesday night. Game 5 tips off at 7:00 PM ET on ESPN, with Boston holding a commanding 3-1 series lead as the 2-seed hosting the 7-seed Sixers. The Celtics have been thoroughly dominant throughout this series, and the numbers suggest they are about to finish the job. Philadelphia is fighting for their playoff survival, but the gap between these two teams has been apparent every time they have stepped on the floor together.

Boston has made quick work of the Sixers through four games, with the series not being particularly close in terms of overall quality. The Celtics’ combination of elite perimeter shooting, defensive versatility, and Jayson Tatum performing at a level that few players in the league can match has made Philadelphia’s task nearly impossible. The 76ers have had moments — Joel Embiid is always capable of going for 30 on any given night — but sustaining that effort for 48 minutes against the best defensive team in the East is a different challenge entirely.

A Market That Is Telling You Everything You Need to Know

The betting market for Game 5 is about as one-sided as it gets. Boston is installed as a -549 moneyline favorite, which means you would need to risk more than five dollars to win one dollar on the Celtics. Philadelphia is available at +405 for the brave few willing to back the upset. The spread opened at Celtics -10.5 and has moved to -11.5, with 90 percent of bets and 91 percent of money backing Boston to cover that number. The total opened at 215.5 and currently sits at 214.5, with a remarkable 92 percent of bets and 91 percent of money on the under. When 90 percent of the entire betting market — bets and money together — agrees on a side, that is not a situation where fading the public offers any clear edge. The market is simply reflecting reality: Boston is significantly better than Philadelphia, and the betting public knows it.

Tatum’s Historic Performance, Embiid’s Injury Cloud, and Boston’s Closing Ability

Jayson Tatum has been playing the best basketball of his career in these playoffs. His most recent performance — 30 points, 7 rebounds, and 11 assists — is the kind of complete, all-around game that defines elite players in the postseason. Tatum is not just scoring; he is creating for teammates, dominating the defensive end, and making the Celtics’ offense nearly impossible to defend because he can hurt you from anywhere on the court. Jaylen Brown remains one of the premier two-way players in the league, and the combination of Tatum and Brown gives Boston the most dangerous starting duo at the playoff level in the Eastern Conference.

For Philadelphia, everything runs through Joel Embiid. The big man is listed as probable for Game 5 with an abdominal injury, and while he is expected to play, the lingering question is how effective he can be at less than full health. Embiid’s projections of 25 points and 10-plus rebounds represent what he can do on a good night, but the Celtics’ defensive structure — particularly with their ability to switch, blitz, and recover — has consistently limited Embiid’s overall impact on the series. Paul George has also been a factor for Philadelphia when he is operating efficiently, but the Celtics’ perimeter defense has made life difficult for him throughout the series.

Boston’s ability to close out series at home is well-documented. The Celtics at TD Garden in the playoffs have been one of the most reliable home teams in recent memory, and the combination of their crowd, their depth, and their coaching gives them every structural advantage when trying to end a series. Philadelphia has not given the Celtics much reason to believe this series will extend to a Game 6. The 76ers would need to win at TD Garden — arguably the toughest building to win in during the playoffs — while being down 3-1, having their best player dealing with a nagging injury, and facing a Boston team that is operating at peak efficiency.

The under angle on the total is also worth examining. At 214.5, the under has attracted 92 percent of bets and 91 percent of money — that kind of consensus is extremely rare for totals betting, where the market is typically split between two well-defined groups. The consensus suggests that bettors believe Boston’s elite defense will clamp down on Philadelphia’s offense in a closeout game, where the Celtics will be highly motivated to play physical, disruptive defense from the opening possession. Embiid’s health adds another variable — if his abdominal issue limits his scoring output, the 76ers’ ability to reach 100 points becomes a genuine question against this defense.

The Celtics have also shown the ability to make adjustments. Boston’s coaching staff has been excellent at identifying what Philadelphia is trying to do and taking it away. The 76ers simply do not have the roster depth to offer different looks on offense, and Boston’s defenders are athletic enough to rotate and recover on every Philly action. This series has been decided by talent disparity, and nothing in the series results suggests that disparity changes in a Game 5 that Boston will approach as a closeout opportunity with enormous focus.

Prediction and Best Bet

Boston has been better in every facet of this series, Tatum is locked in at the highest level, and TD Garden provides the Celtics with the perfect environment to put this away. Philadelphia’s best hope is an Embiid masterpiece combined with turnovers from Boston, but the Celtics have been disciplined enough to avoid that trap through four games. This series ends Tuesday night.

  • Prediction: Boston Celtics 112, Philadelphia 76ers 98
  • Best Bet: Under 214.5

The under at 214.5 is the cleaner play given the public consensus, Boston’s elite defensive motivation in a closeout game, and the uncertainty around Embiid’s effectiveness at less than full strength. Boston’s defense has been spectacular throughout the series, and a motivated Celtics team defending their home floor in an elimination scenario will not allow Philadelphia to run up any kind of offensive total. Take the under and trust the market signal that 92 percent of the betting public is sending.
