The Padres put an 8-1 run and a wild card push on the line Thursday at Coors Field against a fading Rockies team. Here's our pick for San Diego vs. Colorado.

San Diego is playing its best baseball of the year at the worst possible time for anybody standing in the way, and Thursday afternoon at Coors Field, that’s Colorado again.

Quick take:

  • Pick: Padres moneyline
  • Why: San Diego is fighting for a wild card spot and has Michael King on the mound against a Rockies team playing out the string
  • The number to watch: Padres are 9-1 in their last 10 games

The Padres (83-69) roll into the finale of this four-game set having already banked the series win, and they’ve done it while clawing back into the thick of the National League Wild Card race. San Diego sits percentage points behind the Philadelphia Phillies for the second wild card spot, and every game left on the schedule now carries October stakes. Colorado, meanwhile, is finishing out a lost season at 56-96, playing spoiler roles for whoever comes through Denver.

This series has been anything but a formality. The Padres won 8-7 on Monday behind homers from Manny Machado and Fernando Tatis Jr., dropped Tuesday’s game 9-3, then bounced right back Wednesday with a 9-3 win of their own. Ty France, freshly activated off the paternity list, has been the story of the week — three hits in his return Monday, three more hits Wednesday, and he’s slashing .298/.365/.514 with 20 home runs on the year.

What the Market Sees at Altitude

Oddsmakers have the Padres as solid road favorites, with the line sitting around -166 to -185 on the moneyline and San Diego at -1.5 on the run line. The total is hovering around 10.5 to 11, which is about what you’d expect at Coors Field for a game with two shaky-to-mediocre starting pitchers. The market isn’t just pricing in team quality here — it’s pricing in Michael King on the mound against a Rockies lineup that has scored plenty of runs this series but hasn’t gotten stops when it matters.

King’s Steadiness Meets Colorado’s Collapse

Michael King takes the ball for San Diego with an 11-9 record and a 3.03 ERA, a level of consistency the Padres have leaned on all season as their rotation weathered injuries. He’ll face a Rockies lineup that has hit him and hit others hard this series, but Colorado’s issue isn’t scoring — it’s stopping anyone else from scoring more. Tanner Gordon gets the ball for the Rockies carrying a 1-4 record and a 5.55 ERA, numbers that explain why Colorado has lost nine of its last ten games even in the middle of a series where they’ve actually put runs on the board.

San Diego’s lineup has been relentless in this series, and it starts at the top. Tatis is up to 22 home runs and coming off a 449-foot blast Monday. Machado already has 28 homers and is closing in on 400 for his career. But it’s France who has quietly been the most dangerous bat in Denver this week, and this ballpark suits him. He’s a career .364 hitter against left-handed pitching in small samples that include real damage, and he’s hit five homers against lefties in 115 at-bats this season alone.

The Padres have won eight of their last nine games, a run that has pulled them from the outside looking in to a game away from a playoff spot.

That kind of form matters more in September than at any other point in the season. Teams playing playoff baseball in the last two weeks tend to play differently than teams with nothing left to chase, and Colorado fits squarely into the latter group. San Diego has actually struggled on the road this year relative to its home mark, but Coors Field has a way of exposing bad pitching more than it rewards bad hitting, and Colorado’s staff has been the National League’s biggest offender in that department all season.

It’s a short turnaround for both bullpens after Wednesday’s game went the distance, which raises the value of a Padres starter who limits damage and works deep. King has done that more often than not this year, and Mason Miller waiting in the ninth with 37 saves gives San Diego a real lead-protecting weapon that Colorado simply doesn’t have on the other side.

Prediction and Best Bet

San Diego’s lineup is too deep, its bullpen is too settled, and its motivation is on a completely different level than Colorado’s right now. Bettors looking for value beyond the game itself should check the latest FanDuel promo code before locking in a wager on this one.

The pick:

  1. Prediction: Padres 7, Rockies 4
  2. Best Bet: Padres on the moneyline

San Diego closes out this series exactly the way it has played nearly every night for the last two weeks — ahead when it matters most.
