Pirates vs. White Sox Prediction: Pittsburgh’s Hot Streak Meets a Cold Chicago Offense

The Pirates have won seven of their last 10 games and just took two straight from Chicago. Our Pirates vs. White Sox prediction and best bet for September 10.

Hagen Smith has been nearly untouchable this season, but the Pirates just spent two nights making the White Sox forget they’re supposed to be running away with the AL Central.

Quick take:

  • Pick: Pittsburgh Pirates moneyline
  • Why: Pittsburgh has outscored Chicago 13-5 over the last two nights and is riding real momentum into a virtual pick’em price
  • The number to watch: Chicago is 4-6 over its last 10 games with a minus-4 run differential

Pittsburgh and Chicago wrap up their series at Rate Field on Thursday night with first pitch set for 7:40 p.m. ET, and somehow the road team looks like the one playing with house money. The Pirates sit at 73-73 and have nothing left to play for in the NL Central race, yet they’ve won seven of their last 10 and just took the first two games of this set from a White Sox club that entered September holding the division lead. Chicago is 75-70 and still technically first in the AL Central, but the cushion has all but disappeared, and a third straight loss to a non-contender would sting in a way the standings alone won’t capture.

This is the kind of late-season series where one team is playing loose and the other is white-knuckling every pitch.

A Pick’em Line That Doesn’t Match the Recent Trend

The market has this one shockingly close for a game between a division leader and a team well outside the playoff picture. Pittsburgh opened as roughly a -110 favorite on the moneyline with Chicago sitting right around -106 to -110, and the run line has the Pirates giving up 1.5 runs at a plus-money number while the White Sox lay heavy juice to cover at home. The total sits at 7.5. Books are clearly weighting the pitching matchup — Hagen Smith’s ERA is absurdly low — more than the two teams’ trajectories over the last week and a half, which is exactly where the value shows up.

Jones vs. Smith, and a Lineup That’s Heating Up

Jared Jones takes the ball for Pittsburgh carrying a 3-6 record and a 4.46 ERA, numbers that undersell how the Pirates have played behind him lately. Chicago counters with Hagen Smith, whose 3-1 mark and microscopic 0.56 ERA make him look untouchable on paper. But ERA in a small sample doesn’t erase what Pittsburgh’s lineup has done over its last 10 games — a .279 team average with 49 runs scored, and center fielder Oneil Cruz has been the engine of it, hitting .270 with 17 home runs, 60 RBIs and 27 stolen bases on the year while providing exactly the kind of thump that can turn one bad Smith outing into a crooked number.

Chicago’s offense, meanwhile, has gone cold at the worst time. The White Sox have scored just 3.5 runs a game over their last 10 and were shut down repeatedly in the first two games of this series, managing only five combined runs across both losses. A pitching staff posting a 4.27 ERA on the season has to actually hold a lead now, because the bats in front of it aren’t generating much cushion.

Chicago has been outscored by four runs over its last 10 games, while Pittsburgh has outscored opponents by eight over the same stretch.

That 12-run swing in the two teams’ recent run differentials is the single clearest signal in this matchup. It’s not really about who’s “supposed” to win based on the standings — it’s about which team is playing better baseball right now, and that’s Pittsburgh, decisively. The Pirates have won nine of their last 10 series openers and are 8-2 in their last 10 overall by some counts, a stretch that’s included blowout wins and tight one-run affairs alike, showing a club that can beat you multiple ways.

Chicago still has David Bednar-caliber length in its bullpen and Smith’s ceiling working in its favor. But a team riding a two-game losing skid in a series it was expected to control, against an opponent that just dropped 13 runs on it a week and a half ago, is not the safer side at anything close to even money.

Prediction and Best Bet

Jared Jones doesn’t need to be dominant here — he needs to keep this competitive long enough for Pittsburgh’s red-hot lineup to do the rest. Given how thoroughly the Pirates have outplayed the White Sox over the last week, and how shaky Chicago’s offense has looked against a Pittsburgh staff it’s now failed to solve in back-to-back games, the value is squarely with the road team even without home-field advantage. Bettors who like to shop lines before locking in a side should check the latest number through a DraftKings promo code offer, since even small differences matter on a game this close to a coin flip.

The pick:

  1. Prediction: Pirates 5, White Sox 3
  2. Best Bet: Pittsburgh Pirates on the moneyline

Momentum is a real thing in a three-game set, and right now all of it belongs to Pittsburgh.
