Guardians vs. Orioles Prediction: Foster Griffin’s Hot Streak Powers Cleveland to Series Win

The Guardians look to close out their series in Baltimore behind a red-hot Foster Griffin, while the fading Orioles try to salvage one at Camden Yards.

Cleveland already stole one in Baltimore this week, and now the Guardians get a chance to take the series.

Quick take:

  • Pick: Cleveland Guardians moneyline
  • Why: Foster Griffin has been dominant since joining Cleveland, and the Orioles are fading fast with nothing to play for
  • The number to watch: Griffin’s 3.06 ERA over his last 22 starts

The Guardians roll into Camden Yards for the rubber match of a three-game set having split the first two — a 6-4 loss Monday followed by a 9-5 win Tuesday — and they’re clinging to a spot in the AL Central race at 74-72, just two games back of the White Sox. Baltimore, meanwhile, is playing out the string at 70-76, sitting 17 games back in the AL East with essentially no path to October. That gap in stakes matters on a Wednesday night getaway game.

Cleveland has won 6 of its last 10 and is fresh off a doubleheader sweep of Detroit over the weekend. Baltimore has dropped 7 of its last 10 and enters Wednesday on a stretch that’s seen its pitching staff get roughed up nightly.

Why the Market Is Split on a Lopsided Race

Books have this one shockingly tight for two teams with such different seasons on the line. Cleveland opened as a slight favorite on the moneyline in the -104 to -112 range depending on the book, with Baltimore hovering around -108 to -112 on their own side — essentially a coin flip. The run line has the Guardians as 1.5-run favorites at around +145, with the total sitting at 8.5 runs. That number has moved slightly depending on the book, with some hanging Under 9 as the preferred side given both bullpens have been shaky. For bettors shopping this number, checking a DraftKings promo code before locking in a side is worth the extra couple of minutes.

Griffin’s Turnaround Is the Story Here

Foster Griffin is 15-4 with a 3.26 ERA on the season, numbers that would headline any Cy Young conversation if he’d been in one rotation all year. He was picked up from Washington at the trade deadline, stumbled in his Cleveland debut, and has been excellent since — a 3.00 ERA and a sharp 20:9 strikeout-to-walk ratio over his last 27 innings. His last time out, in the second game of Friday’s doubleheader against Detroit, he went six innings and allowed three runs on eight hits, striking out three without factoring into the decision. He’s also been notably better away from home over the last two seasons, posting a 3.14 ERA on the road compared to 3.38 at home, which lines up well for a start in Baltimore.

Shane Baz draws the ball for the Orioles and has taken the brunt of a rough Baltimore season, sitting at 5-15 with a 3.91 ERA and 1.33 WHIP over 163.1 innings. He’s not without swing-and-miss stuff — 145 strikeouts on the year — but a offense that’s scored a league-average number of runs behind him hasn’t done him many favors, and Baltimore is just 3-7 at home over its last 10 games.

Griffin has a 3.06 ERA and a 1.07 WHIP across his last 129.1 innings pitched.

That kind of workload efficiency matters against a Baltimore lineup that still has thump in it — Pete Alonso has 34 home runs and Gunnar Henderson has 22 — but neither has been hot lately, and the supporting cast around them has enough holes that Griffin’s strikeout stuff should play. Jose Ramirez has cooled off for Cleveland too, going just 3-for-23 to open September and getting a planned rest day over the weekend, but the Guardians have found other ways to score, with Travis Bazzana hitting well in his last six games.

Cleveland is also missing outfielder Chase DeLauter, who’s dealing with a sprained wrist and has now sat out four straight games, though he’s reportedly trending toward avoiding the injured list.

Prediction and Best Bet

Griffin’s recent form is the best pitching being thrown by either side in this series, and Baltimore’s home struggles make Cleveland the play even in a game that the number suggests should be a true coin flip. The Guardians have the better arm, the better recent record, and actual stakes attached to the outcome.

The pick:

  1. Prediction: Cleveland Guardians 5, Baltimore Orioles 3
  2. Best Bet: Cleveland Guardians on the moneyline

Griffin gives Cleveland length and swing-and-miss stuff against a lineup that’s cooled off, and that’s enough to close out the series in Baltimore.
