Blue Jays vs. Guardians Prediction: Soriano’s Edge Over Bibee Sets Up Series Finale Pick

Toronto and Cleveland split the first two games of their series behind wild scorelines. Here's the pick for Thursday's finale at Progressive Field, powered by the Soriano-Bibee pitching matchup.

Nobody in this series can find the middle ground — Toronto just hung 11 runs on Cleveland, a night after Cleveland shut Toronto out, and now the rubber match at Progressive Field lands on a pitching matchup that says this one should look nothing like either of those.

Quick take:

  • Pick: Blue Jays -1.5
  • Why: José Soriano is outpitching Tanner Bibee by a wide margin, and Bibee’s teams simply don’t win when he starts
  • The number to watch: Cleveland is 4-10 this season when Bibee takes the mound

Both of these clubs are treading water in September. The Blue Jays sit at 69-71, fourth in the AL East and already eliminated from any real playoff push, while the Guardians are 70-69 and clinging to second in a soft AL Central, 3.5 games back of the White Sox. Neither team is playing for much beyond pride and roster evaluation at this point, which tends to produce exactly the kind of streaky, momentum-driven baseball this series has shown all week.

Toronto has actually won this head-to-head battle recently, taking the series opener before Cleveland answered back, and now Wednesday’s 11-0 laugher swung momentum right back to the visitors heading into the finale. Both clubs are also missing key pieces. The Blue Jays are without Patrick Corbin and Jameson Taillon on the injured list, along with infielder Luis Urías and outfielders Anthony Santander and Jonatan Clase — a lineup already playing shorthanded in the middle of a lost season. Cleveland, meanwhile, is missing starter Slade Cecconi, first baseman Rhys Hoskins, and reliever Shawn Armstrong, thinning out both a rotation and a bullpen that have needed length all series.

A Pick’Em Line That Hides a Real Edge

The moneyline is about as flat as it gets — Cleveland is a modest favorite at home around -107/-108, with Toronto sitting close behind at -105. The run line has the Blue Jays at -1.5 (+153 to +155) and the total is set at 8, with the under drawing slightly more respect at -110 to -112. Books are essentially saying this is a coin flip on the scoreboard, but the pitching matchup underneath that line tells a different story than a pick’em number suggests. Soriano’s Command Against Bibee’s Bad Luck — Or Is It?

José Soriano gets the ball for Toronto with an 11-7 record, a 3.45 ERA, and 149 strikeouts against just 67 walks over 151.1 innings — a legitimate mid-rotation arm having his best full season. Tanner Bibee’s ERA actually isn’t far off at 3.88, and his strikeout stuff is arguably sharper with 128 K’s, but his win-loss record is a brutal 5-14. That’s not all bad luck. Cleveland is just 4-10 this season when Bibee starts and they’re the moneyline favorite, and the team has gone a putrid 6-20 against the spread in his outings overall — a split so lopsided it says as much about a punchless Guardians offense behind him as it does about Bibee himself.

Toronto, by contrast, has actually thrived with Soriano on the bump even as underdogs — the Blue Jays are 15-10 against the spread in his starts this year, and they’ve gone 7-7 straight-up in the 14 outings where they were sent off as the moneyline dog. That’s a pitcher who keeps his team in games regardless of run support, which matters for a Toronto lineup that ranks 29th in the majors in runs per game.

Cleveland is 4-10 this season when Tanner Bibee starts and the Guardians are favored.

José Ramírez is still the name on the Cleveland lineup card, but his .244 average and .724 OPS are modest by his own standard, even with 31 stolen bases mixed in. Chase DeLauter has quietly been the more dangerous bat, hitting .290 with 13 homers and a .450 slugging mark, and Steven Kwan continues to be the table-setter Cleveland leans on, getting on base at a .376 clip out of the leadoff spot. For Toronto, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. anchors the middle of the order and George Springer has 14 home runs, while Ernie Clement has been a steady table-setter of his own, hitting .275 in a lineup that otherwise hasn’t produced much thump. Neither offense has been carrying its team on a nightly basis, which is exactly why this game is more likely to be decided by which starter loses the plot first than by a barrage of home runs.

Park factors matter here too. Progressive Field has played fair for offense most of the season, not the pitcher’s haven some assume, which helps explain why the total sits at a full 8 runs even with two above-average arms starting. That number gives bettors on both sides of it a real case, but it also means neither pitcher can afford many mistakes before the bullpens get involved.

Prediction and Best Bet

Toronto salted this series away Tuesday with an 11-0 rout, and while Cleveland has won 7 of its last 10 games overall, that stretch was built largely against Kansas City and a Blue Jays team playing out the string — not exactly a murderer’s row. With Soriano on the mound and Bibee’s ugly run-support numbers working against Cleveland, the Blue Jays look live to close this series with another convincing performance.

The pick:

  1. Prediction: Blue Jays 6, Guardians 3
  2. Best Bet: Blue Jays -1.5

Fade the home number here — Soriano’s stuff and Bibee’s track record when favored point the same direction.
