Red Sox vs. Yankees Prediction: Schlittler’s Home Edge Meets Boston’s Rotation Crunch

Red Sox at Yankees, Aug. 28: Cam Schlittler's dominant home numbers and Boston's rotation injuries make New York a clear play in this AL East series opener at Yankee Stadium.

Boston needs two wins this weekend just to hang onto the season series tiebreaker, and it starts with a four-game set that could decide who gets a real shot at October in the Bronx.

Quick take:

  • Pick: Yankees -1.5
  • Why: Cam Schlittler has been nearly unhittable at home while Patrick Sandoval is a shaky fifth option for a Boston staff that’s out three key arms
  • The number to watch: Schlittler’s 0.962 WHIP

The Yankees roll into Friday night at 75-58, sitting 3.5 games back of Tampa Bay in the AL East and holding a comfortable Wild Card cushion. The Red Sox, at 73-60, are fighting to stay ahead of a crowded field for a Wild Card spot of their own, six games back of the division-leading Rays with less than a month to play. New York has won its last game and gone 7-3 over its last 10, while Boston dropped its most recent outing in Miami and enters Yankee Stadium on a one-game skid despite also going 7-3 in its last 10.

Here’s the wrinkle that makes this series matter beyond the standings: Boston has actually won the season series so far, taking five of nine meetings between these two clubs in 2026. That means New York needs at least three of these four games just to flip the tiebreaker, which could end up deciding home-field advantage in a potential playoff matchup between these two.

Why the Market Likes the Home Team

Oddsmakers have installed the Yankees as clear favorites, with moneyline prices around -170 to -174 available through a DraftKings promo code and a run line of -1.5 that’s landed near even money on both sides depending on the book. The total sits at 7.5 runs, a number that reflects two lineups capable of scoring in bunches but also two bullpens that have had their issues down the stretch. Public betting money has come in heavily on New York, with roughly three-quarters of bets and an even larger share of the handle sitting on the Yankees moneyline.

The Pitching Gap Is the Real Story

This is where the price makes sense. Cam Schlittler takes the mound for New York carrying an 11-6 record and a 2.16 ERA, with a WHIP under 1.00 and a strikeout rate near 11 per nine innings — numbers that put him firmly in the Cy Young conversation. His counterpart, Patrick Sandoval, has scuffled badly in a Red Sox uniform, sitting at 1-2 with a 4.54 ERA and a WHIP approaching 1.77. Boston simply doesn’t have a better option to throw in this spot; Garrett Crochet remains out with shoulder inflammation, Tanner Houck is still working back from Tommy John surgery, and Kutter Crawford hasn’t pitched since last summer’s wrist surgery. That’s three rotation pieces missing at the exact moment Boston needed length against a lineup that leads the American League in run differential.

Schlittler’s teams are 14-9 this season when he starts as the favorite, and the Yankees have scored early and often behind him at home all summer.

Offensively, New York counters with Ben Rice’s 35 home runs and Cody Bellinger providing table-setting production at the top of the order. Boston will lean on Wilyer Abreu (22 homers) and Ceddanne Rafaela, but the lineup is missing real thump in the middle. Masataka Yoshida remains out with a hamstring strain that could linger into the postseason, and while Adley Rutschman is probable after tweaking his elbow, Boston is still without Trevor Story and Isiah Kiner-Falefa, both working back from their own injuries. It’s a lineup running thinner than the one that took five of the first nine meetings this year.

Bullpen depth tilts the same direction. Boston has burned through Garrett Whitlock and Justin Slaten on the injured list, both dealing with elbow inflammation, which leaves manager Chad Tracy patching together middle relief on the fly in a game his team can’t afford to let get away late.

Prediction and Best Bet

Schlittler’s home dominance and Boston’s pitching attrition make this a tougher climb for the Red Sox than the standings alone suggest. New York should control the middle innings and tack on enough offense against a Sandoval outing that’s been inconsistent all year, particularly with the crowd and short right-field porch working in the Yankees’ favor. Boston’s lineup can scratch out a few runs, but not enough to consistently cover with this pitching mismatch on the mound.

The pick:

  1. Prediction: Yankees 6, Red Sox 3
  2. Best Bet: Yankees -1.5

Lay the run line with New York and ride Schlittler’s home-field edge in a series that could shape the AL East race down the stretch.
