3 MLB Batter Props to Back Today: Coby Mayo, Jose Altuve, and Joshua Baez All Set Up to Cash

Coby Mayo's power surge, Jose Altuve's hot bat, and Joshua Baez facing a struggling Andrew Painter headline today's sharpest MLB batter prop bets.

MLB’s slate is loaded on August 22, and if you’re looking for value away from the marquee moneylines, the batter prop market is where the sharpest edges live today. Three hitters stand out for reasons that go beyond a hot week — favorable park splits, exploitable pitching matchups, and underlying contact quality that the books haven’t fully priced in.

All three of these bets center on the simplest number in baseball: does the batter reach base with a hit or drive in a run. When the projections clear 70% cover probability and the matchup data backs it up, that’s the kind of value worth building a card around.

Coby Mayo Is Punishing Fastballs Right Now

Coby Mayo has been one of the hottest bats in the American League over the past month, and the underlying numbers back up the eye test. Over his last 49 plate appearances in August, the Orioles third baseman is slashing .283/.327/.609, with seven of his 13 hits going for extra bases — two doubles, two triples, and three home runs. He’s homered in back-to-back games and has now gone deep 17 times on the season.

Tuesday’s Yankees game and his earlier blast off Shane McClanahan — a 468-foot missile that ranked as the fourth-longest homer hit in MLB this season — show exactly why this power surge is legitimate and not a small-sample mirage. Against McClanahan specifically, Mayo has already demonstrated he can square up premium velocity, and the model has him projected for 0.9 hits with a 70% cover probability on the Over 0.5 Hits line. DraftKings has this at -150, FanDuel slightly better at -165.

Given his current extra-base-hit rate and the exit velocity readings we’ve seen this month (114.2 mph off the bat on that homer), the volume of hard contact makes this a strong side to lean on.

Jose Altuve Feasting Against Weak Pitching

Jose Altuve’s counting stats for the season — a .245 average with 13 homers and 37 RBI — undersell how well he’s swinging it lately. Over his last 15 games, Altuve is hitting .346 with an .881 OPS, and in August alone he’s compiling an .836 OPS with five RBI and six runs scored across 11 games. He’s had five multi-hit efforts in that stretch, and Friday’s 2-for-4 outing against the Athletics extended that trend into this very series.

The matchup against Jacob Lopez plays right into Altuve’s hands. Lopez and the Athletics have struggled to contain contact-oriented right-handed bats, and the L/R splits here strongly favor Altuve driving in a run. The projection has him at 1.2 RBI with a 75% cover probability on the Over 0.5 RBI line, priced at +157 — plus-money value on a player who has been an on-base machine for Houston all month.

With Altuve batting in a lineup spot where he’s consistently seeing runners ahead of him, and given how well he’s squared up pitching from this Athletics staff already this series, the RBI prop offers real plus-EV.

Joshua Baez Draws a Pitcher in Freefall

Joshua Baez has had a rocky rookie season by the raw batting average (.160), but the matchup here matters more than the season-long line. Andrew Painter takes a 6.43 ERA and 1.55 WHIP into this start, having allowed 92 hits and 56 runs across 80.1 innings this year. Painter’s home splits are particularly rough — a 6.59 ERA and 1.46 WHIP at home, with opposing hitters posting an .288 batting average against him.

Painter has shown some modest improvement over his last four starts (4.43 ERA, 1.18 WHIP), but he’s still allowing heavy, hard contact on a per-game basis, and Baez has already shown pop with three home runs and a .520 slugging mark in limited action. The model projects Baez for 0.9 hits with a 70% cover probability on the Over 0.5 Hits line, and DraftKings has it at -163.

Facing a pitcher who’s given up a near-.290 batting average against at home, Baez getting on base at least once looks like a strong bet even accounting for his overall average.

Today’s Edge

All three of these props lean on the same principle: recent form and matchup context matter more than a full-season batting line. Bettors comparing books for the best number on these lines can check the current DraftKings promo code before locking anything in, since DraftKings is the book offering the number on two of these three picks.
