Pirates vs. Dodgers Prediction: Yamamoto’s Dominance Makes L.A. a Safe Cover

The Dodgers are red-hot and Yoshinobu Yamamoto has been nearly unhittable. Here's our prediction and best bet for Pirates vs. Dodgers on August 21.

The Dodgers have won three straight and just swept a road series in Colorado, and now they get to do it all over again at home against a Pirates team playing out the string 14 games under .500.

Quick take:

  • Pick: Dodgers -1.5
  • Why: Yoshinobu Yamamoto’s 2.60 ERA against a Pirates lineup missing three key bats is too much of a mismatch to fade
  • The number to watch: Opponents are hitting just .186 against Yamamoto this season

Los Angeles sits at 77-51, comfortably first in the NL West with a nine-game cushion over San Diego, and Friday’s 10:10 p.m. ET first pitch at Dodger Stadium kicks off a three-game set against a Pittsburgh club that’s lost its footing in the NL Central race. The Pirates come in at 63-66, and while Oneil Cruz’s return from the injured list gave the lineup a jolt, this is still a roster patched together after losing Ryan O’Hearn, Endy Rodríguez, and Mitch Keller to injury within the same stretch.

The Dodgers have been rolling at exactly the right time, taking all three games of their series in Colorado this week by a combined score that showed off both the pitching depth and the offensive firepower that made them the preseason World Series favorite. Pittsburgh, meanwhile, is deep into the part of the schedule where evaluating young talent matters as much as the standings — Paul Skenes and Braxton Ashcraft have anchored the rotation all year, but neither pitches in this series opener, leaving Chandler to try to slow down a lineup that’s clicking on all cylinders.

Why the Line Keeps Climbing

Books have the Dodgers as steep favorites here, with the moneyline sitting around -230 to -246 depending on the shop and the run line set at -1.5 for Los Angeles. The total is hovering near 8 to 8.5 runs, which tells you oddsmakers expect this Dodgers offense to keep hitting even against a Pirates pitching staff that’s been better than its record most nights. Pittsburgh is +190 to +198 on the moneyline and +1.5 on the spread, and the number has held firm since the series was announced — the market isn’t budging off the idea that the Dodgers are the far superior team, pitching matchup included.

Yamamoto’s Command Against a Banged-Up Pirates Lineup

Yoshinobu Yamamoto takes the mound for Los Angeles at 12-7 with a 2.60 ERA across 145.1 innings, and he’s been nearly unhittable lately — opponents are batting just .186 against him with 136 strikeouts on the season. He’ll be opposed by Bubba Chandler, who’s had a rougher go at 6-8 with a 4.23 ERA and a career-high walk total that’s crept into his outings. Chandler has shown flashes, but a Dodgers lineup that includes Shohei Ohtani, Mookie Betts, Freddie Freeman, and Max Muncy is about as unforgiving a test as exists in baseball for a pitcher who’s still working out his command.

Pittsburgh’s offense isn’t without pulse. Bryan Reynolds is hitting .261 with a .370 on-base percentage and has quietly been one of the more consistent bats in a lineup that’s absorbed a rash of injuries. Cruz, activated off the 60-day injured list on Aug. 17 after fracturing two bones in his hand, delivered a two-run homer in his first game back — a reminder of the power he adds when healthy. But Pittsburgh is without Ryan O’Hearn for another several weeks with a quad strain, Endy Rodríguez remains out with hip inflammation, and Konnor Griffin isn’t expected back until early September. That’s three regulars missing from a lineup that already had to grind for runs.

The Dodgers are 74-47 as moneyline favorites this season, winning better than 61% of those games outright.

That kind of consistency as the betting favorite matters against a Pirates team that’s gone just 38-28 when favored itself — meaning Pittsburgh has typically needed a favorable matchup to win, and Friday isn’t one. The Dodgers’ bullpen has also settled into a groove during this three-game winning streak, and with Ohtani mixing in as both a hitter and occasional two-way weapon, Los Angeles has more paths to putting up crooked numbers than Pittsburgh has to slowing them down.

Park factor works in the Dodgers’ favor here too. Dodger Stadium has never been a launching pad, but a deep, patient Los Angeles lineup thrives in low-mistake environments where one bad pitch turns into a multi-run swing — exactly the kind of margin-for-error problem Chandler has dealt with in his walk-prone starts this season. Pittsburgh’s approach at the plate leans more on contact than power, which can work against pitchers who live in the zone, but Yamamoto’s command has been sharp enough all year that hitters rarely get a mistake to drive.

Prediction and Best Bet

The Dodgers are the better team on paper at every position that matters Friday — a superior lineup, the sharper starter, and the deeper bullpen. Pittsburgh has enough contact bats to make it competitive for stretches, especially with Cruz back in the middle of the order, but expecting the Pirates to slow down Yamamoto and outscore a Dodgers offense playing this well at home is a tough ask.
