The Phillies have won six straight and look every bit like a team gearing up for October, but the last team to actually beat them was the Cardinals, and St. Louis is walking right back into Citizens Bank Park to try it again.

Quick take:

  • Pick: Phillies -1.5
  • Why: Jesus Luzardo has been dominant at home and St. Louis is starting a rookie righty who’s allowed a ton of hard contact in his first taste of the majors
  • The number to watch: Luzardo’s 11.07 K/9

Philadelphia enters Friday at 70-58, sitting second in the NL East, 4.5 games behind Atlanta but comfortably ahead in the Wild Card picture. The Phillies just swept a three-game set from Miami and have won 8 of their last 10, a stretch that’s pushed their run differential to plus-15 on the season. St. Louis, meanwhile, is 66-63 and clinging to third in the NL Central, four games back of Milwaukee’s pace but riding some momentum of its own — a 7-3 mark over the last 10 capped by a wild 10-9 win in Cincinnati on Thursday.

Why the Market Isn’t Buying a Cardinals Upset

Philadelphia opened as a heavy favorite and the number hasn’t moved much: -206 on the moneyline with the Cardinals sitting at +169, while the run line has the Phillies at -1.5 (+109) and St. Louis at +1.5 (-132). The total sits at 8, with the under getting slightly better value at -118. That’s a big number for a team St. Louis just took two of three from less than two weeks ago, but the pitching matchup explains most of the gap — Jesus Luzardo takes the mound for Philadelphia looking for his 12th win, while the Cardinals turn to Hunter Dobbins, still working through his first extended run in a big-league rotation.

Luzardo’s Strikeout Stuff Meets a Lineup Without Its Best Bat

Luzardo has been arguably Philadelphia’s most reliable starter all summer, sitting at 11-5 with a 3.23 ERA and a 1.15 WHIP over 150-plus innings. His strikeout rate is the separator here — 185 punchouts translate to an 11.07 K/9, elite territory for a lineup that’s chasing plenty of swing-and-miss stuff already. Dobbins, by contrast, is 3-3 with a 3.42 ERA in a much smaller sample, just 50 innings, and he’s already allowed 7 home runs and issued 21 walks, numbers that suggest he’s still finding his command against MLB-caliber lineups.

Kyle Schwarber has been the engine of Philadelphia’s offense all year, sitting on 37 home runs and an .888 OPS, and Bryce Harper isn’t far behind at 25 homers with a .381 on-base percentage that makes him a persistent threat even in a down-average season. Trea Turner and Alec Bohm round out a lineup that doesn’t have many soft spots, and with the Phillies riding a six-game winning streak, every hitter in that order looks locked in right now.

St. Louis counters with a lineup that’s been streaky — Jordan Walker has flashed power with 25 home runs, but he’s been in and out of the lineup recently with right knee inflammation the team is managing as a precaution, which could mean a lighter workload or a DH day against Luzardo’s left-handed stuff. Alec Burleson has quietly put together a strong season at .289 with 21 home runs, and Ivan Herrera has provided steady production in the middle of the order, but the Cardinals need their whole lineup clicking to keep pace with a Phillies team scoring at a top-of-the-league clip.

Dobbins has allowed seven home runs in just 50 innings this season.

That home run rate matters against a Philadelphia lineup built around impact bats in the middle of the order. Even with St. Louis playing better baseball lately, asking a young righty still working out his control issues to shut down Schwarber and Harper in a hitter-friendly ballpark is a tall order. The Cardinals bullpen has had some bright spots, but leaning on relief innings early against this offense is a dangerous game plan.

It’s also worth noting the shape of this series. St. Louis took two of three from the Phillies in St. Louis back on August 10-12, including a 7-1 rout that snapped Philadelphia’s momentum for a few days. That result is part of why the number here isn’t even bigger than -206 — the market remembers it too. But road trips to a ballpark like Citizens Bank Park carry a different level of difficulty than hosting a team, and Philadelphia’s pitching staff has been sharper since that series, winning eight of its last ten with contributions up and down the rotation.

Prediction and Best Bet

Philadelphia’s recent form, the pitching matchup, and the raw power in the middle of their order all point the same direction. St. Louis has shown it can hang with the Phillies in this park, and if Dobbins finds an early rhythm this could stay tighter than the number suggests, but expecting the pattern from two weeks ago to repeat itself feels like betting against Luzardo’s stuff and the Phillies’ surging offense. The pick:

  1. Prediction: Phillies 6, Cardinals 3
  2. Best Bet: Phillies -1.5

Philadelphia’s pitching edge and lineup depth make them the play, even against a Cardinals team that’s playing with some confidence right now.
