Padres vs. Mets Prediction: Michael King and San Diego’s Hot Bats Should Handle Robert Stock in Citi Field Rubber Match

The Padres and Mets split the first two games of their series, and now Michael King takes the mound against a struggling Robert Stock. Here is our prediction and best bet for Wednesday rubber match at Citi Field.

Michael King takes the mound at Citi Field looking to settle a rubber match, and he’s doing it against a Mets lineup that just found its power stroke without the guy who’s usually supplying most of it.

Quick take:

  • Pick: Padres -1.5
  • Why: Michael King and a red-hot San Diego offense against a Mets bullpen leaning on a struggling spot starter
  • The number to watch: Robert Stock’s 6.57 ERA and 1.865 WHIP

San Diego (68-59) enters Wednesday’s finale having won eight of its last ten, a stretch that’s pulled the Padres back into the thick of the NL West and wild card mix even with the Dodgers still 8.0 games clear at the top. New York (57-70) has been scrappier than its record suggests lately, but this series has been a split so far — the Mets took Monday’s opener 2-1 before the Padres answered right back with a 5-2 win Tuesday, meaning the season series and the rubber game are both very much live. New York still holds a 3-2 edge in the season series, but a loss today would even it up heading into the final stretch.

Why the Market Isn’t Buying Mets Value

Books have lined this one up as one of the more lopsided pitching matchups of the week. The Padres are sitting around -128 to -145 on the moneyline depending on the shop, with the Mets getting anywhere from +115 to +118, and the runline has San Diego -1.5 at plus money (+125 to +130) — a sign the market thinks San Diego wins this comfortably enough that the flat moneyline isn’t the best way to bet it. The total sits at 8.5, a fair number for a game featuring one above-average starter and one replacement-level arm. Bettors weighing a DraftKings promo code for this one should note the runline carries better value than the flat moneyline given how thin New York’s pitching depth is right now.

King’s Command Against a Diminished Mets Attack

Michael King (8-8, 3.42 ERA, 1.19 WHIP) has quietly turned into the most reliable arm in San Diego’s rotation, striking out nearly eight batters per nine innings and giving the Padres length even on days his stuff isn’t at its sharpest. He beat this same Mets lineup back on June 5 in the season series and has allowed more than three earned runs in a start just five times all year. Opposite him is Robert Stock, thrust into a rotation spot with an 0-2 record and a 6.57 ERA that ranks among the worst marks of any pitcher taking a regular turn in the majors right now. His WHIP of 1.865 means he’s putting runners on base at an alarming clip, and against a Padres order that’s hitting .270 with power over the last two days in this series, that’s a dangerous combination.

Jackson Merrill is 10-for-36 with three home runs and eight RBIs over his last ten games.

Merrill’s surge has coincided almost exactly with San Diego’s 8-2 stretch, and he’s hitting in the middle of a lineup that also features Fernando Tatis Jr. (.279, 13 homers) and Manny Machado, who’s quietly up to 23 home runs despite a modest .212 average. Ty France has been steady all year at .292 with 17 homers, giving King a real cushion to work with if Stock struggles early. New York’s lone counterpunch is Bo Bichette, who signed a three-year, $126 million deal in the offseason and has been arguably their best hitter down the stretch — he’s 14-for-36 with a homer over his last ten games and sits at .268 with 12 homers and 63 RBIs on the year. But Bichette is doing it without Juan Soto, who’s been out since late July with a calf strain and isn’t expected back until September, a massive hole in the middle of New York’s order that Francisco Lindor and Bichette alone haven’t been able to fill.

That absence matters more against a pitcher like King who limits hard contact. The Mets’ bullpen has also lost closer-caliber arm Devin Williams to a shoulder strain, thinning out a relief corps that would otherwise be tasked with holding a lead if Stock can somehow get through five.

Prediction and Best Bet

San Diego’s offense has too much thump right now, and Robert Stock gives them a real chance to blow this open early rather than needing to grind out a one-run win. With King on the mound and the Padres carrying real momentum into the finale, this profiles as a comfortable San Diego win rather than a coin-flip moneyline game.

The pick:

  1. Prediction: Padres 6, Mets 2

Fading a 6.57 ERA starter against a hot lineup with a quality arm on the mound is exactly the kind of spot sharp bettors look for, and the Padres’ recent form backs it up.
