The Braves have the best record in the National League and still can’t find a way to beat the Twins this week — Atlanta looks to avoid a series sweep at Target Field on Wednesday afternoon.

Quick take:

  • Pick: Braves -1.5 (run line)
  • Why: Atlanta’s lineup is starting to break through against Minnesota’s bullpen, and Taj Bradley has to work around a Braves offense that’s found its timing the last two nights
  • The number to watch: Atlanta owns a plus-115 run differential, best in the NL East, despite dropping the first two games of this series

Atlanta (74-52) sits comfortably atop the NL East at 6.5 games clear of Philadelphia, but the Braves have lost four of their last six and now trail 2-0 in this three-game set after back-to-back defeats in Minneapolis. Minnesota (62-65) is a game under .500 and five back of the White Sox in the AL Central, yet the Twins have won two straight and taken care of business against the division leader all week.

This is the finale of a three-game interleague set that Minnesota has controlled from the jump. The Twins jumped out to first-inning leads in both prior games and never trailed, snapping their own three-game losing streak in the process. Atlanta, meanwhile, is trying to avoid its first sweep at the hands of an under-.500 AL team since the calendar flipped to August.

Why the Market Still Trusts Atlanta

Books have kept this close all series, and Wednesday is no different — Atlanta is priced right around -104 on the moneyline with Minnesota hovering near even money, while the Braves sit at -1.5 on the run line at roughly +140 to +146. The total is set at 8.5. That’s a notably thin number for a team that’s outscored opponents by 115 runs this season, and it reflects how well the Twins’ bullpen has matched up with Atlanta’s lineup through two games rather than any real shift in which team is better top to bottom.

Acuña Heating Up, Bradley Looking for a Bounce-Back

Ronald Acuña Jr. has driven in a run in both games of this series with RBI singles Monday and Tuesday, and he’s squarely in the middle of Atlanta’s lineup trying to snap this skid. Matt Olson (.262/.339/.547, 36 home runs) and Austin Riley remain the power threats behind him, even though Riley’s average has dipped to .222 over a rough recent stretch. Michael Harris II (.292/.319/.487) has quietly been Atlanta’s steadiest bat, and Drake Baldwin has chipped in from behind the plate with a pair of multi-hit efforts already this series. AJ Smith-Shawver gets the ball for Atlanta and is still searching for his first win of the season, working with a 4.15 ERA in a small sample as he settles into the rotation — he’s yet to be tagged as a moneyline underdog in any of his starts this year, a sign the Braves still trust their offense to bail him out on tough days.

Minnesota counters with Taj Bradley (9-5, 3.98 ERA), who’s been the Twins’ most reliable arm this year and gives the team a real edge on the mound — his teams have gone 15-8 against the spread in his starts. Byron Buxton (.259/.322/.530, 25 home runs) has been at the center of Minnesota’s first-inning damage all series, and Josh Bell has been the story of the last two games — his two-run double sparked a four-run first inning Monday, and he added a two-run homer Tuesday to power a 4-1 win. Trevor Larnach (.271/.357/.426) has been a steady table-setter atop the Twins order, while Kody Clemens has provided pop from the bottom half of the lineup all series.

Bradley’s track record makes this more than a trap game for the Braves. He’s the kind of pitcher who can keep a slumping offense quiet for six innings, and Atlanta will need to be disciplined early rather than chasing pitches out of the zone the way they did through the first four innings on Monday and Tuesday.

Minnesota has outscored Atlanta 8-3 in the first innings of this series alone.

That early damage has been the difference. Atlanta’s bullpen has otherwise held up, but falling behind immediately has forced the Braves to play from behind against a Twins relief corps that’s been sharp — Yoendrys Gómez has converted all 18 of his save chances this season.

Prediction and Best Bet

Atlanta’s lineup showed signs of waking up late in Tuesday’s loss and has too much firepower to go quietly a third straight time, especially with the pressure of a potential sweep looming. Smith-Shawver needs a clean start to keep this from getting away early, but expect the Braves’ bats — led by Acuña and Olson — to finally break through against a Twins bullpen that’s carried the load in this series.
