Braves vs. Twins Prediction: Atlanta’s Power Bats Should Bounce Back at Target Field

Braves vs. Twins odds, picks and predictions for August 18 at Target Field. Atlanta's lineup power gives it the edge over Minnesota despite Monday's loss.

The Braves have the better record by 13 games, but the Twins just beat them at Target Field, and that’s the kind of head start Minnesota needs against a lineup that can erase a deficit in one swing.

Quick take:

  • Pick: Atlanta Braves moneyline
  • Why: Atlanta’s lineup carries far more thump than Minnesota’s, and Tyler Mahle has been the steadier arm of the two probables of late
  • The number to watch: Matt Olson’s 36 home runs

Atlanta arrives at Target Field sitting at 74-51 and still firmly in control of the NL East, while Minnesota is scrapping to stay relevant in the AL Central at 61-65. The Twins took the series opener Monday night, 4-2, snapping a mini-slide of their own and handing the Braves a rare loss to a team well outside playoff position. Atlanta has dropped four of its last six and enters Tuesday on a one-game skid, even after taking two of three from Arizona over the weekend.

What the Market Is Saying About This One

Oddsmakers still like Atlanta here despite Monday’s result, setting the line at Braves -132 and Twins +110, with the total sitting at 8.5 runs. That’s a modest but real gap for a team that’s lost four of six, which tells you the market is pricing in roster quality more than recent trend. Anyone chasing Minnesota off the Monday win is getting a fair number, but the Braves’ offensive top end is exactly why the price hasn’t tumbled further.

Mahle vs. Matthews, and Why the Bats Matter More

Tyler Mahle takes the ball for Atlanta at 4-9 with a 4.64 ERA, numbers that undersell how competitive he’s been in his last several turns through the rotation. Zebby Matthews counters for Minnesota at 6-8 with a 5.34 ERA, and neither arm is missing many bats deep into games right now, which tilts this toward a lineup-driven outcome rather than a pitcher’s duel. That favors Atlanta, whose lineup simply has more proven thump top to bottom.

Matt Olson is hitting .264 with 36 home runs and a .552 slugging mark, the kind of middle-of-the-order power that can single-handedly flip a close game. Ronald Acuña Jr. is on base at a .349 clip and Ozzie Albies has 20 homers of his own, giving Atlanta three separate threats capable of doing damage against a Twins bullpen that’s been stretched thin by injuries to Joe Ryan, Cole Sands and David Festa. Minnesota does get a boost with Byron Buxton back and swinging a hot bat — he’s at .257 with 25 home runs and a .529 slugging percentage — but the Twins are also down outfielder Austin Martin, who just landed on the injured list with a hamstring strain.

Matt Olson has 36 home runs — nine more than every player in Minnesota’s projected lineup except Buxton.

That power gap is the crux of this pick. Atlanta’s rotation attrition (Spencer Strider, Spencer Schwellenbach and Reynaldo López are all out) has quietly made the lineup the Braves’ primary weapon down the stretch, and Target Field’s pitching-friendly reputation doesn’t fully neutralize a group that can win with three-run swings instead of stringing together rallies. Minnesota’s bullpen depth, already thin before Sands and Festa landed on the 60-day IL, has less margin for error against hitters like these.

Atlanta also still leads a weakened NL East by a comfortable margin, which matters for motivation and roster usage in August. The Braves aren’t pressing the way a bubble team would, and that tends to show up in cleaner at-bats late in games.

Prediction and Best Bet

Atlanta’s lineup depth and Mahle’s recent stability edge out a Twins team getting a lift from Buxton but missing key pieces around him. Bettors who like to shop lines before placing a wager should check the latest number with a DraftKings promo code before kickoff.
