Phillies vs. Orioles Prediction: Brandon Young and Baltimore’s Pitching Edge Loom Large at Camden Yards

The Phillies arrive in Baltimore on a three-game skid with no starter announced, while Brandon Young and the Orioles look to make a statement at Camden Yards.

Kyle Schwarber has been the most consistent power threat in baseball all season, but the Phillies arrive in Baltimore having lost three straight, and Brandon Young’s steady right arm stands squarely in their way of turning it around.

Quick take:

  • Pick: Orioles moneyline
  • Why: Brandon Young has been Baltimore’s most reliable starter all year, and the Phillies are walking in cold off a three-game skid with no starter yet announced
  • The number to watch: Baltimore is 14-3 against the spread this season in games Young starts

Philadelphia sits at 57-52, still holding onto the second Wild Card spot in a crowded NL East, but the last few days haven’t been kind — three consecutive losses have sapped some of the momentum the Phillies built through midsummer. Baltimore, at 53-56, is far from a threat in the AL East race, but this club has quietly played better baseball than its record suggests over the last month, and Friday night at Camden Yards gives the Orioles a real chance to make a statement against a projected National League contender.

Why Vegas Isn’t Buying Philadelphia Here

The oddsmakers have actually installed Baltimore as the moneyline favorite at -120, with Philadelphia sitting at +102 as the road underdog despite having the better overall record. On the runline, the Phillies are -1.5 (+158) and the Orioles are +1.5 (-192), while the total sits at 9, with the under drawing slightly more action at -115 compared to -105 on the over. That’s an unusual split for a team fresh off a losing streak to be favored on the moneyline, and it comes down largely to the pitching matchup — Baltimore has a proven arm on the mound and Philadelphia, as of this writing, does not.

Brandon Young Has Quietly Been an Ace

Brandon Young takes the ball for Baltimore carrying an 8-2 record and a 3.13 ERA across 97.2 innings, with 80 strikeouts against just 34 walks and a tidy 1.29 WHIP. Those are frontline numbers on a team that hasn’t had much starting pitching stability, and it shows in how the Orioles perform behind him — Baltimore has gone 14-3 against the spread in his starts this season and has won 75% of the time he’s taken the mound as the moneyline favorite. When Young is on, this Orioles lineup tends to play loose and aggressive behind him, and that’s a dangerous combination for a Phillies offense trying to snap out of a funk.

Philadelphia’s lineup is still dangerous even in a slump, anchored by Kyle Schwarber, who became the first player in the majors to reach 20 home runs this season and has climbed to 33 homers and 62 RBI while slugging .545. Bryce Harper has been steady if unspectacular at .252 with 22 home runs, and Trea Turner has chipped in 15 homers atop the order. But Alec Bohm has scuffled to a .225 average, and the middle of the Phillies’ order has gone cold at exactly the wrong time, which is part of why this club has dropped three straight.

Baltimore is 14-3 against the spread this season whenever Brandon Young starts.

That number matters here. It’s not just that Young pitches well — it’s that his starts have become something close to automatic value for Baltimore bettors, and Philadelphia’s own rotation uncertainty (no starter had been confirmed as of this writing, with top prospect Andrew Painter unavailable to start and limited to a possible relief appearance) only widens that gap. Philadelphia’s bullpen adds another wrinkle. Orion Kerkering has been outstanding at 6-0 with a 2.61 ERA, but José Alvarado has struggled to a 5.85 ERA, and if this game turns into a late-inning battle, that split could decide it.

Baltimore’s own bullpen has quietly been solid, too. Yennier Cano owns a 2.21 ERA, Tyler Wells has settled in at 2.72, and closer Robert Garcia has converted five saves with a 3.09 ERA. Gunnar Henderson hasn’t hit for his usual average at .219, but he’s still got 18 home runs and remains a threat any time he connects, while Pete Alonso has quietly put together a strong season in Baltimore at .249 with 22 homers and 67 RBI — right in line with Schwarber’s power on the other side.

Prediction and Best Bet

Give the edge to the team with the better-defined plan on the mound. Brandon Young against a Phillies lineup that’s lost three in a row and still hasn’t locked in a starter is a spot where Baltimore’s stability wins out, even with Philadelphia holding the better overall record and sitting in prime playoff position. The Orioles’ bullpen depth behind Young should be enough to close this one out at home.
