Blue Jays vs. Yankees Prediction: Rodon Returns but the Bullpens Could Decide This One

Carlos Rodon is still finding his footing after returning from the IL, and Toronto is throwing an opener. Expect runs, chaos, and Judge lurking in the middle of the Yankees lineup.

The Toronto Blue Jays and New York Yankees wrap up a four-game series at Yankee Stadium on Thursday afternoon, and the pitching matchup could not be more intriguing. The Yankees (30-20) have quietly put together one of the better records in the American League, anchored by a lineup that features Aaron Judge and Ben Rice at the top of the order. Toronto (22-27) has been a disappointment relative to preseason expectations, sitting six games under .500 and struggling to find consistency away from home, where they are just 9-16. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. ET on MLB Network.

The pitching storyline is the headline. New York turns to Carlos Rodon, the veteran left-hander who is making his third start since returning from the injured list. Rodon is 0-1 with a 5.63 ERA through two outings and has yet to complete six innings, allowing five earned runs across eight innings in his return. Toronto counters with Braydon Fisher, a 25-year-old right-hander who is primarily a reliever this season. Fisher is expected to give manager John Schneider two to three innings at most before the Blue Jays hand it to their bullpen. This game could get interesting fast.

Rodon’s Return Keeps Bettors on New York Despite Early-Season Command Issues

New York is a -172 to -175 moneyline favorite on most books, with Toronto coming in at +144 to +145 as the road underdog. The run line is -1.5 for the Yankees at +122 to +125, with Toronto getting +1.5 at -146 to -151. The total is set at 8 to 8.5 runs depending on the book, with the over ranging from -105 to -115 and the under from -105 to -122. Public betting has been overwhelmingly on New York, with 82 percent of bets on the Yankees moneyline.

The numbers make the Yankees look like a comfortable favorite, but the situation is more nuanced. Rodon’s return has been rocky — he has not been able to get through six innings in either of his first two starts since coming off the IL, which puts real pressure on a bullpen that has been used heavily. Fisher, meanwhile, is 2-1 with a 3.08 ERA in 26 innings this season and has shown quality stuff when he has been deployed in starting situations. The market is correctly pricing in New York’s home advantage and lineup depth, but this is not the easiest game to take at -172.

Judge and the Yankees Lineup Are the Difference-Makers

The Yankees’ offense has been one of the most dangerous in baseball this spring. Aaron Judge is batting .256 with 16 home runs and a .567 slugging percentage, continuing his run as one of the most feared hitters in the sport. Ben Rice leads the lineup from the top spot with a .289 average, .388 on-base percentage, and a scorching .654 slugging percentage on 16 home runs through 50 games — extraordinary production from the top of the order. Paul Goldschmidt, batting fifth, is hitting .284 with a .581 slugging percentage and 5 home runs, providing crucial protection in the heart of the lineup.

The Yankees are 16-7 at home this season, making Yankee Stadium one of the best venues in baseball from a home team win-rate perspective. The totals have gone over in 14 of their last 23 home games, suggesting the ball carries well and the offense runs at full throttle in the Bronx. Cam Schlittler has been a revelation out of the Yankees rotation this season with a 6-1 record and a 1.35 ERA in 60 innings, establishing himself as the unquestioned ace of this staff. Rodon, whenever he returns to form, is a credible second starter — but that day is not fully here yet.

For Toronto, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. is the offensive cornerstone, batting .281 with 3 home runs and a .367 on-base percentage through 49 games. He is not having a career year, but his ability to get on base and drive runners in from the middle of the order makes him a constant threat. Davis Schneider is in a deep slump at .136 on the season, which is one reason the Blue Jays’ offense has been inconsistent. Daulton Varsho provides the most well-rounded piece in the lineup with a .277 average, a .440 slugging percentage, and 5 home runs from center field.

Dylan Cease has been Toronto’s best starter this season at 3-1 with a 2.41 ERA and 75 strikeouts in 52.1 innings — but Cease is not pitching today. Fisher as an opener-type will put the Blue Jays bullpen in an early hole, and Toronto’s bullpen has been stretched over this four-game set against a quality New York lineup. The Blue Jays are 9-16 on the road this season, and their recent performances away from Rogers Centre have been inconsistent at best.

There is a scenario where this game plays out in Toronto’s favor — if Rodon’s command is shaky early, Fisher puts up a couple of clean innings, and Toronto’s lineup can get going against a righty-heavy Yankees bullpen. But that is a lot of things needing to break right for a team that has struggled to win road games in 2026. The Yankees have covered only 0 of their last 5 games against the spread, a noteworthy trend, but their lineup advantage is real.

Head-to-head, the Yankees most recently defeated the Blue Jays in the game leading into this series before Toronto won Wednesday night’s contest 2-1. New York took two of three earlier in the week. The series has been competitive, but on the whole, the Yankees have won more of these matchups in 2026 than they have lost.

Prediction and Best Bet

Rodon’s struggles are a concern, but the Yankees have the deeper lineup and the home park advantage. Fisher’s limited capacity as a starter means Toronto will need their bullpen to eat innings against one of the better offensive teams in the American League, and that is a recipe for runs. Even with Rodon’s shakiness, New York’s lineup should be able to do enough damage against a thin Blue Jays pitching plan.

  • Prediction: New York Yankees 6, Toronto Blue Jays 3
  • Best Bet: Over 8 runs (-115)

With Rodon still working through his mechanics and Fisher capped at two or three innings, both bullpens are going to be in play early. The totals have gone over in four of the Yankees’ last five home games, and both teams have hitters capable of doing damage in the middle innings. Lean to the over and let the bullpen arms sort it out.
