Baseball Friday: Can Velasquez save the Phils? Albert picks Mets v Phillies, Yankees v Rays, Dodgers v Pirates, and Pirates v Brewers

Favorite Pick of the Day:
Yankees (-125) over Rays

Reverse Pick of the Day:
Mets (-165) over Phillies

Cali Pick of the Day:
Dodgers (-199) over Padres

Pick’em of the Day:
Pirates (+100) over Brewers

The Skinny:
Friday after the 4th of July seems like a no-brainer for day baseball, but alas, I don’t make the schedule. My favorite of the night game features one of the hottest teams in baseball, the Yankees. After an extra innings win last night, I have no doubt they keep it rolling with Masahiro Tanaka on the bump. The Yankees are 4-0 in Tanaka’s last four starts and 6-1 in their last seven road games. . . . If you follow this series, you know how I love fading Jacob deGrom. Well, the Phillies can’t seem to hit, or really do anything right, so I’m taking the Mets. The Phillies are 2-9 in Vince Velasquez’s last 11 road starts vs. a team with a losing record, to add insult to injury. . . . Since we’re so good with this category, let’s keep it going. The Dodgers were the first team to 60 wins thanks to last night, and are 6-0 in their last six games vs. a left-handed starter. Plus, with Clayton Kershaw on the mound, they’re even better. Check out these sample sizes: the Dodgers are 51-12 in Kershaw’s last 63 starts after allowing two runs or less in their previous game, 42-10 in Kershaw’ s last 52 home starts and 43-11 in Kershaw’s last 54 starts when their opponent scores 2 runs or less in their previous game. Wowie. . . . The Brewers are slight favorites, but that’s ok, it’s a pick’em in our hearts. And all the trends point to the Pirates being the pick of em all. Simply put: they’re hot at home. The Pirates are 7-1 in their last eight home games, 7-0 in their last seven home games vs. a right-handed starter, 6-1 in their last seven home games vs. a team with a losing road record and 6-1 in their last 7 home games vs. a team with a winning record. Need anything else? Ok cool.
