The Skinny:
What's better than baseball, beers and grilling on the Fourth of July? Making money, that's what! That's why I'm getting time and a half for these picks today. Anyways . . . This feels like a game that Phillies fans might overlook given the holiday and having better things to do than watch baseball, but this is a sneaky important game. Unfortunately, I think the team might do the same thing. The Braves are 5-0 in Mike Soroka’s last five home starts and the Phillies are 0-5 in Zach Eflin’s last five starts vs. a team with a winning record. Seems like a pivotal game in the NL East race, despite the extra fanfare . . . The Dodgers love walking it off when I pick them to lose, which is great for them, but heartbreaking on a personal level. Regardless, they’re a better team than the Padres with a much better pitcher on the mound. The Dodgers are 4-0 in Hyun-Jin Ryu’s last four starts following a team loss in their previous game. He got rocked last time out, so expect him to be locked in . . . What does Vegas know that we don’t about this one? Sure, the Red Sox have lost four of their last five, but they’re a far superior team than the Blue Jays. They are 7-1 in Hector Velazquez’s last eight starts vs. a team with a losing record. Not a clue why this is a pick ’em. But Vegas must have one . . . White Sox in a pick ’em at home? Oh yeah, I’m all over it. They are 5-1 in their last six overall and 5-0 in their last five home games vs. a team with a road winning percentage under .400. Combine that with the fact that the Tigers are 0-5 in Matthew Boyd’s last five starts and you’re in good shape.
