Thoroughbreds Tuesday - McMudder touches on a handful of races at Parx

Published on

Turf horses vs. dirt horses. This is a familiar refrain from Mick but today deserves another mention.

There are three kinds of horses when it comes to turf. Those that need it, those that want it and those that don’t care. The need to have it horses either spent the winter in Florida or on a farm. They only turf and that’s that. Potomac River, winner of the third at Delaware yesterday is one of those. He has never hit the board on dirt and NEEDS turf to be competitive. Then in the want it category, you get Rock Solid Golfer, winner of the fifth at Delaware yesterday. He doesn’t run on dirt often, but he has success when he does. Connections obviously think he is better on turf and he proved to be pretty good yesterday. The don’t care horses are the most fun since they run no matter what. This is the case for Congressionalstorm who ran fourth in the eighth race yesterday at Parx. This 9 year old has run 43 times on dirt and 22 times on turf, is a winner on both and bangs out checks. She is not a very high end horse but she runs no matter the surface.

PICKS FOR TUESDAY, JUNE 4, 2019:

More wonderful weather.

Parx Race 1 (12:55 p.m. ET)
2-Larry Doby obviously pays homage to the late baseball player that followed Jackie Robinson as the second player of color in the major leagues. The equine version here is well placed to be a winner first out and comes from a barn that gets them ready. The field is not much and he will get bet but this one was shipped across the country for a reason and it was probably his distaste for the polytrack at Golden Gate. 5-Finn’s Posse keeps banging and improving incrementally. A second here would be the next step. 3-First Degree Burn spent most of last year out jumping around, literally. He made three national steeplechase starts. He should be fit off a solid work tab.
Parx Race 1
$10 W/P/S 2- Larry Doby
$2 Exacta box 2,5
$1 Trifecta box 2,3,5

Parx Race 6 (3:10)
6-Mary Costa won this race (essentially) last out and comes back to do it again. The shorter distance should be a positive since this one has gas. The greatest challenges should come from 5-Nth Degree who will be rolling late and 7-Roll On Big Mama who beat the pick two back but on an off track. 9-Whitney Cove should be around to pick up some pieces.
Parx Race 6
$10 W/P/S 6-Mary Costa
$2 Exacta box 5,6
$1 Trifecta box 5,6,7
$0.10 Superfecta box 5,6,7,9

MICK’S QUICKIES

Parx Race 3 (1:49): 7-Informality takes a logical step up for a top barn. Good price in a race with a suspect favorite.

Parx Race 7 (3:37): 2-Midnight Poker looks to be the stand out here but this is a really deep race and 5-Tudox Expectations is making the trip in from Presque Isle for a guy that ships to win.
