Thoroughbreds Wednesday: Garrity found a pair of stakes races at Indiana Grand
We're back for a Wednesday, and we are going to focus on the racing at Indiana Grand, where they are running a couple of midweek stakes races, both for state-breds. There's a good supporting card to back up those stakes, so we will restrict our play to Indiana today.
There's been rain in Shelbyville, Indiana overnight Tuesday into Wednesday, and today is iffy. At press time Wednesday morning the main track was muddy, and they were off turf. So we'll handicap these races for a wet track. Let's go.
Race 3 in Indiana (post time: 3:11 pm; as always, all times here are Eastern) is a first-level allowance for fillies and mares 3 and up at 6 furlongs on the dirt. We're going with speed here, and that is 8-Jets a Ginnin. This 4-year-old filly is 4-for-6 lifetime, and though she's never run in the slop before, she is absolutely, positively going to get the early lead, and we think she keeps going all the way. We will bet her to win at 2-1. The bet: Indiana Grand, Race 3, $25 to win on 8-Jets a Ginnin.
Race 6 (post time: 4:35 pm) in Indiana is the Swifty Sired Fillies Stakes, a 6-furlong dirt dash for 3-year-old Indiana-bred females. There's a good field of seven in here, with the hot 3/5 morning-line favorite starting, 1-Fireball Baby, breaking from the rail. The chalk looks tough here, but we are going to try to beat her, and we're going to do it with early speed: 6-First Lady Maggie is clearly the swiftest early runner, and we will bet that she gets an easy early lead and hangs on late. We'll bet her to win at 6-1. The bet: Indiana Grand, Race 6, $25 to win on 10-First Lady Maggie.
The 7th at Indiana Grand (post time: 5:03 pm) is the Sagamore Sired Stakes, the colt counterpart to the Swfity Sired. There's another heavy favorite in here, 2-Ace of Aces, who's even money. Though his merits are obvious, we think he's a play-against, as he's an early-speed type, and there is other speed in the race, including the horse to his inside, 1-Thatswhatithought. Breaking from the rail, Thatswhatithought really has no option but to gun for the lead, and we see Ace of Aces going right with him. This will set the race up for 5-Snicker Cookie, who has by far the best closing kick in the in the race. We see a nice stalking trip from him, sitting midpack on the rail while the speedsters tire each other out, and then a big move at the top of the stretch. We will bet Snicker Cookie to win at 2-1. The bet: Indiana Grand, Race 7, $30 to win on 5-Snicker Cookie.
That's all for today. We'll be back tomorrow. Until then, as always, good luck at the windows.
