Mims on Esports and the PA Cup Tournament in Pennsylvania
The Esports community is attracting attention in Pennsylvania. Harrisburg University held a tournament, the PA Cup, that included 16 esports teams from the Commonwealth. The tournament was held on March 30-31 and consisted of competitions in “League of Legends”, “Overwatch” and “Hearthstone”.
Some of the participants in the tournament were Temple University, Penn State, Drexel University, Kutztown University, Lafayette College, University of Penn, Slippery Rock University and Harrisburg University. Drexel won the “Hearthstone” division while host Harrisburg won “League of Legends” and “Overwatch”.
Tournaments like this are signs that Esports is a growing economy in this country and region. There are also indicators that by engaging female gamers in high school and college the correlation between the pursuit of a STEM degree increases. Science, Technology and Mathematics are areas that will enhance our next generation in terms of critical thinking.
