Men’s Quarterfinals

Stan Wawrinka over Daniil Medvedev

Maybe this is a bit of wishful thinking, but I believe the NYC fans are going to get behind Stan the Man and push him until he finally subdues new Russian bad-guy, Daniil Medvedev. In his Sunday evening beating of a hurt Novak Djokovic, Wawrinka started out hitting his groundies hard, and simply got better and stronger as Djokovic shrank from the competition. Wawrink boasts a great backhand, a great forehand, a great serve, and the will of a lion. But, so does Medvedev. The Russian has looked darn good here in The City, but in fairness, he’s had a pretty easy draw in which he has yet to play a seed, and since players shine against their competition, it’s a bit hard to judge just how good Medvedev has been this week. But one thing’s for sure: he can serve. Sometimes his service games last under a minute, as he fires a bazooka, reloads, and just does it again. However, the intangible here is that Medvedev has gladly accepted the role of villain for his few nights of bad behavior and has purposely incited the large crowd against him. In this match, the chickens will come home to roost.

Roger Federer over Grigor Dimitrov

The tennis community is pleased to see Grigor Dimitrov in this year’s U.S. Open quarters. After injuries, rehab, and a somewhat stilted comeback, Dimitrov finds himself playing for millions as he takes on one of his two nemesises from Switzerland, Roger Federer. We already know that as long as Dimitrov doesn’t draw Stan Wawrinka he stands a good chance of winning matches, but he’s 0-7 against the other Swiss, and he hasn’t taken a set from Federer since January 2016. I’m sorry to say, for Dimitrov’s sake, he’s just got no chance winning this match today. But welcome back to the top tier of the ATP Tour, Grigor!
