Women’s Finals
Serena Williams over Simona Halep
I’m finally throwing in the towel. I’m picking Serena Williams to win this match, and her 24th Grand Slam title, not because she is a great player. She was a great player, but she’s just an aging athlete trying to hold on for as long as possible in a very mediocre group of professional women. I’m picking Williams to win this match because even at almost 38 years of age, even at probably 35 pounds overweight, even though she has a serious anger management problem and not only has not apologized for her outburst in last years’s U.S. Open final, but she has affirmed her behavior as the correct way to handle the situation, even though she makes me sicker than spoiled food, even though her average opponent in the Wimbledon fortnight has had an average ranking of just 79, she is better than Simona Halep. It’s pretty much that simple.
The American and the Romanian have played ten times and Halep has been able to win a paltry one match. And although Halep has reasserted herself on the WTA Tour by getting to the Wimbledon finals, I have few doubts that Halep does not possess the game to beat Williams. Williams serves too well, hits her groundies too well, and is a ferocious competitor, and these attributes will prove far too great for Halep to overcome. Should the gritty Halep take a set, I’d find that an accomplishment.
