Saturday Men’s Finals Singles pick
Taylor Fritz over Sam Querrey
I guess it’s about time Sam Querrey started to play some winning tennis. He’s been quite the dog this year, and his falling ranking has saddled him with really crappy draws, when he’s had the guts to even play. In reality, he was blessed with a really easy grass-court draw here, with his toughest opponent being the Spaniard Fernando Verdasco. Still, he’s won four matches in a row, and no matter who you end up playing on the Tour, they’re all really great players and fine athletes, so his accomplishment this week shouldn’t be minimized. But Taylor Fritz’s path was a bit more rigorous, after the first round drubbing of this year’s NCAA champion, Brit Paul Jubb. Jubb, who who played for South Carolina, won a tournament in which the two defending finalists didn’t even play, and their school (Wake Forest) was represented by their number 3 player, a guy from Israel. For me, Fritz’s win over Hurkacz in the quarters was huge, and has convinced me that he’s ready for Wimbledon. Fritz should win this, but it’s on grass, and it matters little, if only for prize money and ranking points that won’t count for seeding purposes for these guys until the U.S. Open rolls around.
