Protests, riots, flares, oh my: Premier League Monday picks sees Liverpool travel to Manchester United

There are heavy threats of protests ahead of the glamor tie in English football today

Sean Miller

We do not have to go back very far to find a Premier League game with as much drama surrounding it as the one Monday at Old Trafford.

That is, IF the match gets played.

In May of 2021, Manchester United fans crashed the gates and got into the stadium and on the pitch pregame, causing the biggest game in England, Liverpool v Manchester United, to be postponed. That protest was against the Glazer family and the formation of the European Super League, which Liverpool';s owners also joined.

That was shortly abandoned (or was it??), but the damage had been done.

Today, there are more threats ahead of the match, and Old Trafford looks like a fortress. It has not been a fortress for the Red Devils in the last year, and they are in danger of losing a third-straight match to start a season for the first time in a century.

Speaking to Betfair, former Manchester United defender Patrice Evra said: “I don't ask those players to play amazing every game, but to fight. If they don't fight anymore it's because those players don't want to be there and they don't respect the badge.

“Ten Hag is also responsible for what is going on, he's had the transfer market, the only thing I will say is that he has been fooled the same way other managers have been fooled. The results against Brentford and Brighton I wasn't surprised about.

“Against Liverpool we will need a miracle. The only positive thing is Liverpool haven't won a game yet, so they also don't look ready yet. Winning this game [against Liverpool] is the best feeling when you're a United player, and losing is the worst feeling. For two weeks Sir Alex Ferguson wouldn't even say 'hi' to us or shake our hands if we lost to Liverpool.

“I always say, if we won against Chelsea that meant we would win the league and it was a big statement. If we won against Arsenal, no disrespect but it was like winning against our babies. If we won against Man City, it was winning against our noisy neighbours. If you win against Liverpool it was about history. It's the biggest rivalry for the fans and you could see during the week how the players were training, it was absolutely different, the tension. Normally Sir Alex wouldn't watch every training session, but he would be there for every minute and he would pick players based on if they could handle it.”

Betfair Spokesperson, Sam Rosbottom said: “It’s been a miserable start to the season for Manchester Untied and their fans aren’t happy. Seeing their team rock bottom of the Premier League table and the manner of their defeats, it’s no surprise that the majority of Reds feel this is the worst United side of all time.

“Things could still get worse with a match against one of their biggest rivals next. The odds are very one sided, with Liverpool clear favourites at 8/13 to win and heap more misery on Erik ten Hag. Despite being at home, Manchester United are as big as 4/1 to get all three points, with the draw 16/5.”

On the Glazers…

  • 69% of Manchester United fans agree that the Glazers should sell the club as soon as possible

On the current Man United team…

  • 60% of Manchester United fans agree that this is the worst Man United team of all time

Liverpool is already seven points behind Arsenal in the table, and five behind Manchester City, so this is a massive match for them as well. There have been some rumblings from fans about FSG as well, despite some success in the last five years on the pitch.

You know me, and I think this United team, with Casemiro, Gakpo, Antony, and other reinforcements either already done or potentially on the way, will be fine after the break.

But tonight, I don't see it.
