Premier League Week 1 Saturday picks: Liverpool, Tottenham, Chelsea all open looking for top four

Fulham v Liverpool, Bournemouth v Aston Villa, Leeds United v Wolverhampton, Newcastle United v Nottingham Forest, Tottenham v Southampton, and Everton v Chelsea are the games on the slate Saturday

The Premier League is back, to begin what is going to be most likely the greatest nine months of European football ever.

We are going to have games jam-packed all over the place, then in mid-November, we will pause for a month to contest the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, before getting right back to the action just days after France repeats as world champion (I hope for my wagers).

But that is then: now, we have the best league in the world back in action this weekend.

There are six matches on tap, starting with Premier League (and UEFA Champions League) runner-up Liverpool visiting every-other-year newcomers Fulham.

The two other teams that came up from the EFL Championship play at 10 a.m. EDT. By the way, can anyone tell me which of the two teams in the top flight playing Saturday have the most European Cups?

Did you guess Chelsea? That is one; who is the other?

Nottingham Forest, which has not been in the top flight since 1999. That season ended with the greatest season in Premier League history, the Manchester United treble.

One team that Brad Friedel and many are high on for the 2022-23 season is Tottenham, and the Spurs could get a few goals Saturday playing against a team many think could be relegated, Southampton. Harry Kane is -120 to score, and +450 to get two or more.

"Harry Kane is still the best in the league as an out-and-out centre forward," Friedel told Boyle Sport. We need to see how Erling Haaland performs, but Tottenham's forward options are right up there with Son and Richarlison."

The late game of the day sees Chelsea, which is still looking to add players to a squad that might be a little lacking, visit an Everton team that Sergio Aguero thinks will be much better this season.

"Frank Lampard’s Everton could be a surprise package this year and Villa, Newcastle, and Brighton could all have brilliant campaigns," Aguero said. "Lampard's Everton could definitely be a surprise package. There are always surprises in the Premier League."
