England Carabao Cup QF: Arsenal, Chelsea, West Ham v Tottenham, Liverpool v Leicester, as big clubs seek semis

Only one lower league team is left in the draw—Sunderland— as the cup is dominated by top half of the table teams

Sean Miller

There is one thing we know for certain heading into the Carabao Cup quarterfinals Tuesday and Wednesday: we will have a new champion.

Manchester City had won the last four titles, five of six, and six of the last eight, but were knocked out of the cup on penalties by West Ham United last round.

West Ham is one of eight teams left in the cup, and will be one in one of three games (maybe) to be played Wednesday.

Arsenal hosts the only team from outside of the Premier League to make it this far, League One side Sunderland, in the lone Tuesday contest.

In fact, all of the other teams left are from the top 12 in the current Premier League table, including five of the top seven teams; but that is what this tournament has become, a chance for the elite to pick up an early piece of silverware.

With City out, there is a chance another team can break through and win. But here is the deal: Chelsea is riddled with COVID-19 positives, and Thomas Tuchel had said (hopefully flippantly) that the Blues might not show up to face Brentford. Liverpool is in the same spot.

I am going to assume that Jurgen Klopp rotates here, and maybe that Leicester City has a chance to go through if he does. You have to check the lineups an hour before any game, because there are going to be crazy changes in all the games.

The tie of the round will see Tottenham, which just got kicked out of Europe for not playing its UEFA Europa Conference League game with Rennes due to COVID, taking on a well rested West Ham United team.

Make sure you take advantage of these games now, because there might be some pauses soon.
