Lille plays biggest match in a decade Friday, with Ligue 1 title in sight
Is there a bigger story in European domestic football than what is happening right now in Ligue 1?
PSG, the team that outspends every other team in France by orders of magnitude, is on the ropes. The Parisian side trails Lille by a point in the table, with Monaco now seemingly out of the race with three matches left in the season.
That’s right: Lille, with its three titles (1946, 1954, and 2011) has last year’s UEFA Champions League finalists sitting in second. If Lille wins out, it wins the title, no matter what PSG does in its three games.
This is the main weekend in the race. Lille has to visit fifth place Lens Friday, while PSG visits seventh place Rennes in the final game of the weekend. Lille then gets St. Etienne (12th) at home and Angers (13th) on the road to end the campaign, while PSG hosts Reims (11th) and visits Brest (14th).
If Lille wins today, all the pressure is on PSG Sunday. Look for that to happen.
In Russia, Sochi faces Rotor Volgograd (with a minus-36 goal differential) knowing a win moves it into a European spot. Go with Sochi.
