Big night at Stamford Bridge as Chelsea tries to hold lead in UEFA Champions League
For fans of teams in the top four Premier League battle, this might be a night to root for Chelsea in the UEFA Champions League Round of 16.
The Blues head back to Stamford Bridge with a 1-0 lead on aggregate over Atlético Madrid, and if they finish the tie, there will be more fixture congestion for Thomas Tuchel’s team.
But this is not as simple as that. Cast your thoughts back to last March, just before the pandemic shut down the world, and Atléti’s trip to Anfield in the 2019-20 Round of 16. Diego Simeone’s squad came to England holding a 1-0 lead, which was cancelled out in regulation and bettered by a Liverpool goal early in added extra time.
But Atlético scored three times in extra time, two by Marcos Llorente, to set off chaotic scenes in the away end and send the Spanish side into the quarterfinals.
So what is your point, you say?
Do not count out Atléti today.
